Engine went in for the second oil consumption test on 6/17/23 where Hiley Hyundai did not record the correct mileage they put that mileage at that time was 123,893 when it should have read 126161 ( which was 4k miles more than the time of this report) than that therefore it lead Hyundai to believe that the engine was not burning oil and we was in the write mileage due to human error we was denied a new engine and because this is the only car that we have at this time and Hiley has no loaners and we are in CH 13 Bankruptcy we do not have the funds to rent car out

2017 Hyundai Sonata with 108,600 miles, has experienced oil consumption/burning, since at least 85k miles. Costs outside of manufacturers recommendation: *Oil consumption report ($85) *Extensive engine cleaning ($500) -Hyundai considers 1 quart consumed per 1000 miles, acceptable. *Rod bearing clearance test ($140) **Engine replacement (reason for complaint, will cost $3880) Hyundai dealership most recently stickered oil change at 3,800 miles. At approximately 3,000 miles, the oil pressure light began to flash on/off. I checked the oil, it was low. I called the dealership to ask for advice. They indicated my car was OK to drive to the dealership (40 miles away), for service. On the way to the dealership, on the highway, my vehicle started to experience intense vibrations. My check engine light came on. I had to take my car from ~65 mph down to about 40 mph in a very short time, trying to maneuver in between semi-trucks, going from the left lane to the right shoulder. This was not safe, my engine could have seized. After this, my engine emits a loud knocking sound. Once I arrived, the dealership recorded 2 quarts of oil in the engine. After the oil change, the knocking sound still remained. They indicated they would not recommend driving the vehicle until they investigated the knocking sound. They performed the rod-bearing clearance test, and indicated it passed. With the knocking sound, their recommendation is to not drive the vehicle, and to replace the engine, ($3880 with many reductions in price). They've indicated Hyundai corporate would decline to replace the engine because the tests are not favorable for replacement. I've submitted an escalated case to Hyundai (HMA), to look into this. In short, they have declined to do anything because my VIN, year/model, do not qualify for any extended warranties, or recalls, to require anything to be done. The vehicle is not safe to drive. I've done all maintenance, and am left to suffer.

My car has been burning oil, i took it for service at the dealership and all they did was change the oil and tell me to come back in 1000 miles, and to do this 3 times, however before the 1000 miles while driving with other passengers in the car my engine started over heating, i had to pull over immediately, i checked the oil dipstick and it already showed below the LOW line, at this point i am assuming there is no oil left in the engine

I called State Farm insurance to get my vehicle towed to Ralph Sellers Hyundai in Gonzales La. where it is being repaired. About 3 weeks ago I had just left my house, battery fully charged and gas tank full. I was coming down a hill to a stop sign and started braking. Suddenly the car seemed to lose power and essentially stopped moving. There was an error on the dash saying "hybrid system failure". There was barely able enough power to slowly pull the car over to the side of the road. I turned off the car and checked the battery in the trunk - I didn't see any obvious concerns. My husband got there 10 minutes later and we tried turning the car on again. It came on fine but there was an engine warning light. We were able to drive it without difficulty back to my house. I was unable to get a timely appointment at my local Hyundai dealer, so a couple days later My husband drove it to a local garage to see if they could figure out what the problem was. When he turned the car on again the engine light was no longer on. However, at the garage they were able to pull up a history of the car alerts and it confirmed that it said hybrid system failure. I have done some research online and it sounds like there was a recall on Hyundai sonatas hybrids for 2017 but I did not see a recall for the plug-in version of the hybrid. I searched online, however, and there were many other owners of Hyundai sonata plug-in hybrids that reported the same incident. I am hoping that a recall gets is issued for the plug-in hybrid as well so that more owners don't have the same problem. If I had been driving on the highway at 65 mph in a middle lane and my engine suddenly lost power it could have been fatal. Oh - one other recent problem I had that I'm not sure is related is that my car recently started losing electric miles very quickly. From the time it was purchased until a few months ago, it was losing plug-in miles at about 1 mi per year (i.e. each year a fully charged battery gave me 1 mile less). Then about 6 months ago it started losing electric miles very quickly - about 1/mo. Dealer said it was normal aging.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that his wife was able to drive the vehicle to an independent mechanic. The contact stated that the mechanic retrieved various codes from the engine, and P1326 for the engine knock code and informed his wife that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and performed a bearing clearance test and replaced the knock sensor. The dealer determined that the engine did not need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine). The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 122,000.

Problem 1: I made a right turn at a red light. As I turned my power steering light turned on and my steering wheel locked up and I lost control of the vehicle. After stopping and turning off the vehicle, I restarted it. At this point I was able to regain control of the car. A few days later the same thing happened again as I made a right turn from a parking lot into the flow of traffic. One again I stopped the engine and restarted the car, then I regained control of the car. Problem 2 (May be related): My passenger side headlight was replaced a year ago. Recently the light went out again. I took the car in to a mechanic to repair it. It was repaired so I thought. Two days later the light went out again. The mechanic believes their may be an electrical issue. Problem 3 (May be related): My driver side brake light was replaced about a year ago as well. It has now gone out again. I have had my vehicle serviced twice by a Hyundai dealership at least twice since the first incident.

In winter of 2018, my husband and I purchased a certified pre-owned 2017 Hyundai Sonata, and from the moment we drove it off the lot, it had an oil consumption problem. Then, in 2023, the spark plugs began failing. Each time this happens, the whole car shakes and stops running. We found out that Hyundai and Kia engines from 2009-2022 have major problems and that there are many class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer. We contacted both the dealer and Hyundai corporate to find out how we could fix the engine. We have small children and just wanted to repair our family car. The dealer refuses to fix it. They told us that it's Hyundai's problem. Hyundai acknowledged that we are eligible for a new engine but that until a certain rod fails and the whole engine implodes, they can't do anything about it. We have this in an email from corporate. We recently welcomed a new baby and had to buy another car because we felt this Sonata was not a safe choice to drive our children around. The solution to this problem should not be driving around in an unsafe car until it completely stops working. I'm hoping that the NHTSA can help me by sending out an inspector who can attest that this is a safety issue.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the headlights were very dim while driving at night. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was contacted, and the contact was provided a diagnostic fee to have the vehicle inspected. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the defect was a manufacturer defect that only the manufacturer could resolve. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
