Our 2025 Honda Odyssey Touring has repeatedly stalled or nearly stalled while driving. Of at least three dealer visits, the stalling issue was first formally documented on XXX, when we reported the engine shutting off twice while driving and the brake warning light activating twice. DTC 15477 ("failing starter") was recorded, and the starter was replaced. XXX, my [XXX] daughter was driving alone when the van lost power at a red light and would not respond to the accelerator once the light turned green. She was unable to shift gears or shut off the engine, and the van remained unresponsive in live traffic for several minutes before power returned on its own. A bystander helped restart the vehicle and move it to safety. I believe this defect is the subject of open NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004 (opened XXX), covering 2018–2025 Odyssey and related Honda/Acura models for Auto Idle Stop failing to restart after a stop. On XXX, the dealer confirmed the software was current, the battery was healthy, and replaced both relays, completing every step of Honda's documented repair bulletin. Hours later, on the drive home at 27,942 miles, the van stalled again at a stoplight. The dashboard instructed the driver to depress the brake and press the switch to continue driving. The driver powered the vehicle off and restarted it to regain control. Video of this incident: [XXX]. Dates of incidents: XXX – Two engine shut-off events and two brake warning light events reported; starter replaced. XXX – Daughter's incident described above. XXX – Software, battery, and relays completed per repair bulletin; vehicle stalled again the same day at 27,942 miles. Repair history: Full documented scheduled maintenance and bulletin remedy applied (starter, software, battery, relays) across three or more visits; vehicle stalled again hours after the final step was completed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My van will stall at red-lights. It started three weeks ago. The car is a year and a half old. The auto- idle stop system is activated. We stop at a red light. Car stops. When we go to start car dings and thankfully has started 3 times. This time, the car made a ding and did not re-start. I was stuck at a now green light and couldn't move. The dash flashed hit the brake to re-start. I did numerous times. I couldn't get the car to switch to park or drive. I tried switching the car on and off and couldn't get it restarted. I was disabled for about 2 minutes before it kicked back on. My kids were in the car and this scared me.

- #11759780August 26, 2026ENGINE, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
I am filing a safety complaint regarding a recurring, severe defect involving the 2025 Honda Odyssey's starter motor and the factory-installed Auto Idle-Stop (idle-stop) system. While driving, the vehicle's Auto Idle-Stop system engaged as designed when coming to a complete stop in traffic. However, when trying to accelerate, the vehicle failed to restart automatically. The engine completely stalled out on an active roadway. Attempts to manually override the system and restart the vehicle using the ignition button failed completely, resulting in an immediate and dangerous loss of propulsion. This defect presents a severe and immediate traffic hazard, as it unexpectedly leaves the vehicle completely disabled and stranded in active lanes of traffic. It strips the driver of the ability to clear the roadway to safety, significantly increasing the risk of a rear-end collision. Multiple occupants, including passengers in the rear seats, were exposed to extreme danger due to this sudden propulsion failure.Despite bringing the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership, the manufacturer has failed to provide a permanent safety remedy. Also Honda corporate has deny warranty replacement for the starter that’s causing the issue.

The vehicle experiences sudden, intermittent engine stalling while idling (either when coming to a stop at traffic lights or while idling in traffic). The engine shuts down completely and fails to automatically restart via the Auto Idle-Stop feature, forcing the driver to manually cycle the ignition or shift to Park to restart. This has happened multiple times since I bought the car at Stevens Creek Honda in September 2025 and have taken it to get it service at Livermore Honda in November 2025 and again in August 2026. The dealer has been notified but the defect remains unresolved, presenting an immediate safety risk of being rear-ended in active traffic due to sudden loss of propulsion.

After stopping at a red light the engine auto stopped and would not restart after releasing the brake. After 20 minutes of trying to turn the vehicle on/off it finally restarted. Serious safety concern since it was a busy road and the vehicle couldn’t be put into neutral to push it out of the lane. The vehicle is under 20,000 miles and in the warranty period. I haven’t taken it to the dealership to determine the issue however they did say there are no service bulletins for this issue. This is the first time it has happened but I have since turned off the auto start/stop before every drive in fear that it will cause a crash in the future.

5 times since July 2026 the vehicle 2025 Honda Odyssey fills with the smell of gas. The smell fills the entire garage. After the 4th incident, it was brought to the dealership on 8/18/2026, however they were unable to reproduce the issue smell. They stated the EVAP system was function and at the time there were no obvious leaks. Despite it being a known issue, there are no recall or repairs per the dealership. They stated that Honda is apparently aware and are "investigating." The smell recurred today and was immediately brought to the dealership since the problems was not reproduced when previously in their possession. It was noted by multiple staff member but since there is no known fix, there was nothing the dealership could do. They are aware of several other Honda Odysseys with this issue in the same area. I was instructed not to park the vehicle in the garage which makes me concerned for mine and my family's safety. The smell can be very overwhelming and makes me lightheaded.

While waiting at a stop light, the engine turned off and the vehicle forced itself into park. Taking my foot off the brake, had no effect. I was not able to put the vehicle back into drive. I had to shut off the engine and restart it in order to drive again. Of note, the AC and carplay were running at the time of the engine failure. No warning lights appeared. Cars behind me were honking at me. I have an appointment scheduled with the dealership to assess the auto-idle function.

While driving our 2025 Honda Odyssey, my wife came to a complete stop at a red traffic light. The vehicle’s Auto Idle Stop feature was enabled, as it is by default each time the vehicle is started. When the light turned green and she attempted to accelerate, the vehicle would not move. The engine appeared to be running/revving when she pressed the accelerator, but the vehicle remained stationary as though the brake was still engaged. A message appeared on the instrument panel instructing her to depress the brake pedal and press the start/stop button. Initially, we believed the electronic parking brake might have been engaged, so she attempted to disengage it, but this did not resolve the problem. She was stuck in an active traffic lane at an intersection and unable to move the vehicle, creating a significant safety concern. Another person advised her to completely turn the vehicle off, wait approximately 10 seconds, and restart it. After doing so, the vehicle operated normally again. After this incident, I learned that NHTSA is already investigating Auto Idle Stop/no-restart complaints involving Honda vehicles, including 2025 Honda Odysseys, under Engineering Analysis EA25-004. I also learned that Honda has previously communicated with dealers regarding Auto Idle Stop no-restart incidents involving 2023–2025 Odysseys. This was an extremely concerning failure because the vehicle unexpectedly became immobilized at a traffic light and could not be driven until it was shut down and restarted. I am concerned that this could happen again in a much more dangerous situation. I am submitting this complaint so that this incident is documented as part of NHTSA’s investigation and to request that NHTSA determine whether a safety recall or other corrective action is necessary.

My car slammed on the brakes on its own. I was almost rear ended. I was going 45-50 miles an hour. I think it saw a shadow. Previously it has alerted me to brake because of shadows. This is the first time it braked hard on its own.

Vehicle turns off unexpectantly at red lights/intersections when auto idle engages and will not restart automatically. It takes 1 to 2 minutes for the vehicle to restart. There is no predicting when the issue occurs. Causes vehicle to be immobile in busy and congested intersections which results in safety issues to us and oncoming traffic. There is a potential for a head on or T-bone collision when this happens. We've had starter replaced before at 22,000 miles and now we have to do it again at 36,000 miles. The Honda dealer said he sees this issue twice a week so we aren't the only ones. To my knowledge, Honda has yet to come out with a permanent repair.

The contact owns a 2025 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while sitting at a traffic light, with the Auto START/STOP feature engaged, the vehicle completely shut off. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The failure was a recurring failure. The battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

When the engine is hot, the car hesitates to start for a couple seconds. Occurs on really hot days especially after stopping and starting the engine such as after getting gas or on idle stop at a redlight. The motor starter has been replaced by Honda to a new one but the issue can re-occur as the part being replaced is the same with the same build and will likely fail again in hot conditions.

Starter issue both during idle start/stop mode and going from off to on. Owned for about 20mos and happened first maybe 6mos ago and has happened a dozen times since then. So dangerous! We have had idle start freeze at a green light and are worried we’ll get hit. Sister in law has the same problem with hers. This needs to be fixed immediately!

At a stop light and in traffic several times the vehicle has failed to restart when stopping for the idle start/stop. The vehicle will not immediately restart and takes several minutes, leaving me idle in the middle of traffic. The vehicle has been to the dealership several times for repair however I'm still experiencing this issue. This is a serious safety concern for my family.

While stopped at a red light or intersection, the vehicle's Auto Idle Stop feature engages and shuts off the engine as designed. However, on multiple occasions, the engine has failed to automatically restart when the brake pedal is released. The vehicle remains stalled and unresponsive in the middle of the intersection or traffic lane, creating a safety risk to myself and other drivers, particularly at busy intersections. In some instances, the vehicle needed to be fully powered off and restarted before it would move again. This is a known and widely reported defect affecting Honda and Acura vehicles with the Auto Idle Stop system, currently under NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA25004. The problem has occurred repeatedly and unpredictably, with no consistent warning beforehand. The vehicle and its Auto Idle Stop system are available for inspection upon request. The problem has not yet been confirmed by a dealer, though I intend to bring it in for diagnosis. There were no warning lamps or messages before the failures occurred; the only symptom was the engine simply not restarting after an automatic idle stop.

I was at the red light and the car wouldn't come out of idle. The battery light came on and the i tried to turn the car off and it just keeps cycling. I had to open the door for the car to cut off and then restart the car. This is the 3rd time this has happened and almost resulted in me and my children being hit.
