I was driving approximately 45 MPH and my 2023 Yukon STOPPED completely and it would not move at all, it stopped just into where the intersection starts. After 2 hours it was towed to the GMC dealership. I am now told that it needs a new engine at just 15,000 miles. Apparently this is a “thing” I had no warning whatsoever. The dealership has it now and it is waiting on a new engine. Extremes scary and now they said they will put a new one in and it “shouldn’t happen again”. Ridiculous Engines are on back order for at least 60 days because of this problem I’m told.

On March 21, 2025 my 2024 GMC Yukon Denali's engine died while driving 80 miles an hour down the highway with my family. We were able to coast to the shoulder. The vehicle would not restart. We called a tow truck. When the tow truck arrived the vehicle started but we decided to take the vehicle to closest GMC dealer. They ran diagnostics on the lights that were showing on the dash and nothing was reported. They had no recommendations. We were 3 hours from home returning from Spring Break so we decided to keep traveling. We made it about 120 miles and again the engine died while traveling 70+ miles on the highway. We were able to safely coast to the shoulder. We called a tow truck and the Yukon was towed to the local GMC dealership. The next week it was reported to me that the Yukon would need a new engine. The 1, 3, 5 rod bearing had spun and the 3rd trust bearing had spun. Since there were no rental cars in the city available we rented a U-Haul truck and drove 2 hours home. Almost one month later we are awaiting the new engine to be delivered.

My wife was driving the vehicle down a major highway in Tulsa and it immediately shut down and started slowing down. She was in the left hand lane had to cross 3 lanes of traffic with a dead engine. Luckily she wasn’t ran into because traffic was very heavy. This could have resulted in injury or even worse. She made it off the highway by about a foot and had to sit there for 30 minutes before I could get there. The vehicle had to be towed to a dealership and they just confirmed that the engine was blown. The vehicle only has 70,000 miles on it and has had regular oil changes.

I was driving down the interstate traveling 75 mph and with any warning the vehicle shifted into neutral. I made my way to the side of the interstate with any ability to accelerate on a busy stretch of highway. I had my children in the car with me. After making my way off the road, I shifted car to park and it wouldn’t go back into drive. I turned the car off, in an effort to put the car back into drive. The car wouldn’t not restart. We were stranded in the side of the interstate 6 hours from home. I had the vehicle towed to Ed Morse GMC in Rolla, MO. The let me know after a few days that my vehicle needed a new engine and that this has been an issue with other 2021 GMC Tahoe vehicles. We decided to have the vehicle towed to Bob Howard GMC in our town, Edmond, OK, and they confirmed a new engine was needed. In all we had to replace the engine, radiator, cooler lines and fuse array. There were zero messages or warnings leading up to this event. This was very u expected, scary and u safe for not just my family in my vehicle, but all the vehicles around my that day on the interstate.

We own a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali with the 6.2L engine. On [XXX], I was driving to work and merging into traffic on [XXX] just south of Nashville. When getting up to speed, the engine shut off and the truck started to decelerate. Only warning light was notification to "Hit Start Button" - which off course I was feverously doing as I was in rush-hour traffic. Luckily, I was able to move across two lanes and came to a stop on the freeway shoulder. Called OnStar services where they sent a tow truck, but the driver didn't know how to tow the truck since he was unable to shift into 'neutral' as the electronic system didn't allow that without the motor on. A second tow truck was sent by my local dealer and then they had to 'drag' the Yukon onto the tow truck bed so they could haul it. After the dealer reviewed the issue, determined we needed an entire motor as the engine oil had metal shavings in it and had frozen the motor. We are one of seven vehicles at our dealership waiting on a new 6.2L motor. GM has provided a large SUV rental during the time we have been waiting. The vehicle was handed off to the dealer for a routine oil change and transmission flush. The dealer stated over the phone that during the engine's oil draining process, the tech noticed metal particulates in the oil. The oil was allowed to completely drain until no drips fell from the drain plug. The tech then filled the engine with new oil to the correct level. After the trans flush was complete, the tech took the vehicle for a test drive, during which they noticed strange engine noises. The tech then parked the vehicle in the garage bay, where the engine subsequently failed. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?: The dealer has not confirmed the exact cause of the failure, however it is expected to be because of a failed connecting rod bearing. The NHTSA may contact the dealership for information regarding an inspection. The dealer is Koons Chevrolet Buick GMC in Clarksville, MD 21029. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?: UNKNOWN, vehicle was parked at the time of failure Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? : UNKNOWN, There are many forums online in which people have stated similar issues. The Onstar module becomes inoperable due to a fault with the onstar module. This is a known issue on many forums and GM has yet to issue a fix with mass reported Onstar module failures. This fault renders useless the safety systems.

I was passing a semi truck at 80 mph on the highway, after passing I tried to reduce my speed on the cruise control but got no response from my vehicle. I pulled off the highway and the engine was dead. I feel lucky to be alive the truckers were whizzing by at 80mph while we waited for a tow truck. The dealer has confirmed the engine is seized. There were no warning lights or other symptoms.

WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ON 2/21/25. MY 2023 YUKON (WITH GM ENGINE L87 IN IT) WARNING LIGHT CAME ON CALLING THAT THE TRUCK SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, PRESS START. PULLED OVER TO BREAK DOWN LANE, RESTARTED AND WENT ON OUR WAY. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF ANY TYPE OF ISSUE AND STATED TO BRING BY IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. 8 DAYS LATER THE 2023 YUKON WITH GM ENGINE L87 SIEZED ON 3/1/25 WITH ~23,000 ON IT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. VECHIE WAS TOWED TO GMC DEALERSHIP WHERE THE SUV WAS PURCHASED AND HAS BEEN SITTING EVER SINCE WHILE WE WAIT FOR A NEW ENGINE COME IN. DEALER HAS BEEN HELPFUL, BUT I HAVE READ THAT THERE IS A BIGGER ISSUE WTH THE L87 ENGINE.

This vehicle had a complete engine failure. We lost power and could not start it. We were stranded on a busy highway. This all happened going 65 mph. The dealer told us that we would need a complete engine replacement. We had about 16,500 miles on it. I personally know two other people that this has happened too.

I was driving my vehicle at a speed of around 50 MPH when the vehicle had an sudden loss of power. The vehicle displayed press the start button while the vehicle was still moving with the motor off. I pressed the start button and the vehicle shifted to park and went to complete loss of power functions. The hazard lights would not work, the vehicle would not start or move out of park. The vehicle was stuck in the fast lane in park with no way of moving it or warning others with hazard lights. My daughter and I almost got hit by a semi due to the vehicle issues. I had to call 911 to get police there for safety concerns and a tow truck to take the vehicle back to the dealership. The tow truck couldn't get the vehicle out of park as well, so he had to drag my vehicle onto the tow truck. I have a 2021 Yukon Denali with the 6.2 engine. The dealership told me I need a new engine because of a known failure with the engine. They can't promise me replacing the engine will fix the issue. The vehicle has less then 60,000 miles on it. This engine issue put my life and my daughters life in danger. I had to carry my daughter across the highway because it was unsafe to stay in the vehicle. I can only imagine what could of happened if we were traveling at higher speeds with no way to exit the vehicle. The dealership told me it is going to be 3 to 4 months before I get my vehicle back and they can't promise the new engine won't do the same thing. This is a huge safety concern that GMC needs to address. I am stuck paying for a vehicle that puts my family in danger. Something needs to be done immediately. The dealership told me they have several Yukons in the shop with the same issue waiting for an engine replacement.
