My 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 truck exhibiting all the same signs as the recent call for the same 2021 truck recall according to the dealership. This is for the L87 V8 engine. The 2021 engine was used in the 2019 trucks but again the 2019 trucks are not a part of the recall. My repair bill is upwards of $10,000 and diagnostics is upwards for $4,000 even though all are aware of the recent recall and my truck having the same engine.

The contact owned a 2019 GMC Sierra 3500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle went into “Engine Power Reduced Mode” and the contact attempted to pull over to the side of the road, but the contact stated that the battery went dead and the vehicle shutoff. The contact shifted to park(P) and attempted to restart the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to restart, and smoke started coming from under the hood. The contact stopped attempting to restart the vehicle, and exited the vehicle and raised the hood, and the vehicle was on fire in the engine compartment on the left side of the firewall. The contact stated that there was gray and white smoke coming from the vehicle and an odor of electrical wires burning. The contact attempted to reach for a fire extinguisher but was informed by another driver who had stopped to see if the contact needed assistance, to step away from the vehicle. The other driver saw the flames coming from the engine compartment and told the contact to step away from the vehicle because it was unsafe to attempt to extinguish the flames, and the engine compartment became engulfed in flames. The Fire Department was contacted and arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle and the front bumper, hood, engine, and engine components were damaged by the fire. Additionally, the front windshield was severely damaged. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot and declared a total loss by the Insurance provider. The contact stated that the Fire Department filed an incident report. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact related the failure and the fire to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V496000 (Equipment) which was associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 242,000.

- 6.2 engine lost propulsion & warninng light on dash flashed about 3-5 times. After that the trucks engine completely malfunctioned. When this happened i was traveling at 70mhp on interstate I-69 when the the truck lost power to the engine, steering and power braking. The truck was inspected by a GM dealer and they found the engine had blown & with that it caused damage to the coolant system & to the catalytic converterin which all was replaced at full customer cost. Prior to the engine failure 2 other times it lost power and had a rough ilde and trouble starting . 1st time the dealer could not replacate the issue the next time found a camshaft postioning sensor was bad which was placed at customer cost.

I washed my truck on a Saturday and as I was driving later that morning my tailgate opened while in transit. I did not notice this until I had stopped. After a little digging I found the 2019 tailgate electric switch is prone to this problem when it gets wet. There were no warning lamps for this problem.

While merging into highway traffic the truck surged with RPM going to 5,000. Shortly after this event there was a grinding or rattling noise in the transmission bell housing along with unusual shifting behavior and a repeatble vibration + rotational noise between 50 and 60 MPH. The vehicle was brought to the dealer for inspection at least 4 times with claims they could not hear the obvious noise that did not go away. On the last drop off, I picked up the vehicle and the noise was gone but the shifting behavior and the constant vibration from the transmission still persists. The dealer said GMC would replace the transmission for approximately $10,000 but I would need to cover 50% of the cost. Vehicle had 35,700 miles on it and was 4 months beyond the 5yr warranty. Still unrepaired. No warning lamps, messages, or codes. Transmission component failure is imminent based on the vehicle behavior

I was driving with my wife about to merge into traffic on the interstate when I had a huge power loss. It was a busy part of the interstate where I could have been ran over. There was a lot of traffic and was fortunate the Semi driver was alert and slowed down. I was not aware of any failures of this motor or received any notices from GM. After conducting research I found that this was a know issue that GM failed to report. My truck has been serviced regularly and until that point had not given any signs of a upcoming failure, I have read that GM is looking into other years such as 2019 which mine is. I have had no luck with GM customer care with the only response being I need to crunch the numbers from my claim advisor. I have the 6.2 L87 motor and know of the clip failure do to poor assembly and parts and debris getting into the motor causing the failure. I am looking to report this and request any assistance available. My first stop was the dealership, then GM customer care

Driving down the highway at approximately 65mph, when I accelerated to 70mph my truck began to shake violently flashing a check engine light, service parking brake light, and service ESC light, the engine began to violently shake and make a rough knocking noise Had the vehicle towed to the mechanic where I was informed that the lifter on cylinder 2 had collapsed and that it would be $12,500 to replace all 16 lifters as well as the cam shaft on my engine My safety was at risk as my truck went into a “limp” mode and essentially shut off on the side of the road, others were at risk due to my truck becoming a hazard, the tow operator was at risk having to pickup my truck on the side of a 70mph freeway The only check engine code I had was a misfire on cylinder 2 Dealership stated that it was a known issue but that my truck was outside of warranty, and not apart of recall so there was nothing they could do Had truck towed to different shop that is repairing the problem Requested that all parts be kept in case of inspection request

- #11666873June 13, 2025ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The manufacturer placed two 12v batteries to start the truck with one being located on the passenger side just in front of the cowl of the cab. The factory OEM batteries are known to overheat when charging which is exactly what mine did and as the battery boils over with sulfuric acid, the acid is vaporized and ingested into the cabin. It’s a diesel so it’s common for me to take my dog in the rear crew cab with me and leave the engine running so the cabin will stay cool in the summer while I work my contractor job. When I let the engine idle with windows up and AC on the overcharged battery introduced the vaporized sulfuric acid into the cabin and rendered the interior deadly toxic. Luckily I was only gone from the truck for about 10 minutes but in this amount of time the acid was very bad and caused burns in my dogs throat and mine while driving home. I can only imagine if this scenario were to take place with kids left in the truck for many reasons to stay cool but could easily turn into a deadly situation. PLEASE look into this before someone or some poor animal is fatally injured or killed.

My 2019 GMC Sierra Denali shut off suddenly while I was stopped in traffic. The engine died, the steering wheel locked, and the dashboard displayed warning messages including “ESC,” “power,” and another I didn’t catch. The truck would not restart despite attempts. The check engine light is now on. This happened without warning, and I had no prior mechanical issues. The vehicle is well maintained, garage-kept, and recently received a full service including oil change, brake work, and 75K-mile recommended service. I fear this is related to a known issue affecting other GMC engines under investigation for sudden power loss.

There is a common lifter failure issue with the 5.3 V8 engine in these vehicles and local mechanics I've spoken too are very aware. The 6.2L was recalled for the same reason. GM would not honor or cover any of this as it was "out of warranty", however, I strongly feel this should be investigated.

The engine failed and needs full replacement. Known GM issue with lifters. Engine style 6.2L. We contacted GM and they are not responsive and they provided a claim number. To repair is over 9,000$ and I still owe about 7000$ and the truck was purchased brand new. GM cannot furnish a replacement engine. The dealer showed 34 in stock when ordered. The dealer contacted us later stating GM canceled the order and they do not have an ETA when they can send an engine for the vehicle. We are paying on a vehicle that is stuck at dealer and cannot be repaired.

I had a 2019 GMC Sierra with a 6.2L gas engine. The engine failed while I was driving on the highway at 65 mph. The truck began shaking badly, check engine light and all kinds of warning lights came on. I pulled over and drove slowly 10 miles to a GM dealer who then told me that I should not be driving the truck due to safety concerns and it could lose power and lead to an accident. I had it towed back to my home town ($500 later) to the GMC dealer where I purchased the truck. They told me the same thing, it could not be driven. GM has since recalled vehicles with this same 6.2L engine manufactured in model years 2021-2024. I believe that recall should have included my 2019 truck. I was at risk of serious injury or death due to engine failure, fortunately I did not crash. However, I lost $14,000 in value of the truck thanks to the faulty engine. I believe the recall should be expanded and I should be compensated by GM for the engine failure. I have attached the estimate for the repair.
