US Pet Owners Prioritize Pets in Holiday Travel Decisions
A recent survey commissioned by Subaru of America indicates that family pets are a primary factor in holiday travel choices for U.S. owners. The findings show that a significant majority of pet owners opt for road trips over air travel to ensure their animal companions can join them.

A new survey commissioned by Subaru of America reveals that family pets are increasingly central to holiday travel plans for U.S. owners, often influencing decisions to drive rather than fly. The research, conducted by Talker Research among 2,000 U.S. drivers and pet owners, found that 73% of respondents are more likely to take a road trip specifically to bring their pet along.
Pet Influence on Holiday Travel
The Subaru pet travel survey indicates that pets significantly impact holiday arrangements. Approximately 68% of pet owners reported that their animals would affect their travel plans this year, and nearly half, 45%, have declined travel opportunities that could not accommodate their pets.
More than one in four pet owners are willing to alter their holiday plans due to their pets. This includes 10% choosing to host gatherings at home instead of traveling, another 10% shortening or simplifying trips to care for their animals, and 8% skipping certain events if their pets cannot join. The survey also highlighted a generational difference, with 35% of Gen Z and millennial pet owners bringing their pets home for the holidays, compared to 22% of Gen X and baby boomers. Furthermore, 45% of pet owners begin planning a pet-friendly long weekend at least three weeks in advance, with 24% starting over a month out.
Vehicle Features for Pet-Friendly Journeys
When pets are part of the travel equation, comfort and companionship become key priorities for drivers. The Subaru pet travel survey found that over half of respondents, 51%, prefer traveling with a pet over a human companion. This preference translates into specific demands for vehicle features.
Among the most desired features, 32% of pet owners prioritize ample room for pets, passengers, and luggage. Good visibility to see their pet while driving was important to 29% of respondents, while 27% valued easy-to-clean seats and cargo areas. Cargo space for pet crates, carriers, beds, or other gear was a priority for 26% of pet owners, a figure that rose to 35% among hybrid and electric vehicle drivers. Subaru advises ensuring the use of appropriate accessories to keep both pets and occupants safe and comfortable during travel.
Generational Shifts in Pet Travel Habits
Younger generations are demonstrating a stronger inclination toward pet-inclusive travel. The Subaru pet travel survey revealed that 75% of Gen Z and 70% of millennial pet owners have taken a road trip with their pet in the past five years, significantly higher than the 58% of Gen X and 40% of baby boomers.
This trend extends to travel planning, with 42% of Gen Z and millennial pet owners actively planning their trips around their animals, compared to 27% of Gen X and boomers. For those who have not yet road-tripped with their pets, 74% of Gen Z and millennials expressed willingness to consider it, whereas only 54% of Gen X and boomers shared the same sentiment.
The survey findings underscore a significant trend among vehicle owners to prioritize their animal companions, particularly during holiday travel. This growing demand for pet-inclusive experiences aligns with initiatives like Subaru's long-standing "Subaru Loves Pets" program, suggesting a continued need for pet-friendly vehicle design and accessories in the automotive market.
