Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) announced its U.S. sales results for September and the third quarter of 2026, revealing an upward trend driven significantly by electrified vehicles. The Lexus division contributed to this growth, posting notable increases in both monthly and quarterly sales figures, particularly within its electrified lineup.
TMNA's total sales for September 2026 reached 201,306 vehicles, marking an 8.4 percent increase in volume compared to September 2025. Electrified vehicles accounted for 117,215 of these sales, representing a 37.8 percent volume increase and comprising 58.2 percent of the total sales for the month. For the entire third quarter, TMNA sold 633,223 vehicles, a 0.6 percent volume increase over the same period in 2025.
Electrified vehicle sales for TMNA in the third quarter totaled 363,367 units, reflecting a 28.5 percent volume increase and making up 57.4 percent of the company's total quarterly sales. The Toyota division alone achieved an all-time high electrification mix of 61 percent, underscoring the growing consumer preference for hybrid and plug-in hybrid options across the brand's portfolio.
Lexus Division Achieves Strong Growth
The Lexus division demonstrated robust performance, reporting September 2026 sales of 29,837 vehicles, an 11.4 percent increase in volume compared to September 2025. This monthly growth was significantly bolstered by electrified Lexus models, which saw sales of 13,110 units—a substantial 47.4 percent increase for the month.
For the third quarter of 2026, Lexus sales reached 93,056 vehicles, marking a 1.6 percent volume increase over the third quarter of 2025. Electrified Lexus vehicles were a key growth driver during this period, with 38,140 units sold, representing a 23.1 percent volume increase. These figures highlight the increasing demand for Lexus's hybrid and plug-in hybrid offerings.
Electrification Strategy and Market Outlook
Toyota Motor North America's sales strategy continues to emphasize a diverse range of powertrain options to meet varying customer needs. Across both the Toyota and Lexus brands, there are currently 32 electrified vehicle options available in dealerships, providing consumers with numerous choices for more fuel-efficient transportation.
Andrew Gilleland, senior vice president of the Automotive Operations Group at Toyota Motor North America, commented on the results, stating that the third-quarter performance confirms customer demand for choice. He noted that the company's multi-path strategy, encompassing both affordability and electrification, aligns with customer lifestyles. With strong momentum and managed inventory levels, TMNA is positioned to conclude the year successfully.
