Acura Previews Hybrid SUV Prototype, New Hybrid Strategy
Acura has unveiled a Hybrid SUV Prototype, part of a broader strategy to introduce 15 new hybrid models by 2030, primarily in North America. The prototype showcases advancements in two-motor hybrid technology, targeting over 10% fuel economy improvement and new electric AWD.

Acura has revealed a next-generation Hybrid SUV Prototype during a global Honda business briefing in Japan. This prototype offers a preview of one of 15 new Acura and Honda hybrid models slated for introduction by 2030, with a primary focus on the North American market.
The unveiling of the Acura Hybrid SUV prototype highlights the brand's accelerated push into electrified vehicles, aligning with Honda's broader environmental and product strategy for the coming years.
Acura's Hybrid Expansion Plans
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. CEO Toshihiro Mibe stated that Honda intends to reallocate development and production resources towards hybrid models. This strategic shift aims to expedite their market launch and increase the number of available products ahead of previous schedules.
Mibe emphasized Honda's consistent progress in hybrid vehicle technologies, viewing them as crucial for addressing environmental challenges. Acura specifically plans to begin launching its initial hybrid models, featuring an entirely new hybrid system and next-generation platform, within the next two years.
Advancements in Hybrid Technology
The next iteration of Honda's two-motor hybrid system has undergone significant improvements. These advancements include an expanded range where the engine operates at peak efficiency and enhanced driving efficiency of the hybrid unit itself.
Overall, Honda is targeting a fuel economy improvement of more than 10% for these next-generation hybrid models. Concurrently, the company aims to reduce system costs by 30% while further refining the Honda driving experience.
Additionally, a newly developed electric all-wheel-drive (AWD) unit will be integrated, designed to provide highly precise and responsive motor control. This technology is expected to contribute to both performance and efficiency in the upcoming hybrid lineup, including the Acura Hybrid SUV prototype.
Future Driver Assistance Systems
Honda also provided an update on its next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which is scheduled for introduction starting in 2028. This advanced system is designed to assist drivers with vehicle operations such as acceleration and steering.
The ADAS will function throughout an entire route, from origin to destination, operating seamlessly on both expressways and surface roads based on driver inputs to the navigation system. By integrating this next-generation ADAS into hybrid models, Honda aims to offer customers a combination of driving enjoyment and a stress-free, comfortable mobility experience.
For Acura owners and prospective buyers, this announcement signals a significant expansion of hybrid options and the integration of advanced driver assistance technologies in the near future. The Acura Hybrid SUV prototype represents a key step in this strategic direction, promising more efficient and technologically sophisticated vehicles.
