This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 21-009-25 REV. C, issued on July 4, 2025, addresses specific transmission concerns in various 2020-2025 Stellantis vehicles equipped with the Eight-Speed Auto 850RE Transmission (Sales Code DFT). This bulletin supersedes TSB 21-009-25 REV. A, dated February 01, 2025, and includes revisions highlighted with asterisks, such as an updated Market Applicability note and repair procedure details. The primary focus of this TSB is to resolve issues related to the D clutch within the transmission.
Symptoms
Owners of affected vehicles may experience a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination on the dashboard. Additionally, they might report one or more of the following transmission-related symptoms:
- "Transmission slips when shifting"
- "Vehicle will not move in reverse"
- "Vehicle will not shift higher than third gear"
These symptoms typically occur in vehicles that have accumulated at least 7,000 miles (11,265 km).
Fault Codes / DTCs
When diagnosing these symptoms, technicians may find one or more of the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the vehicle's system:
| Code | Description |
|---|---|
| P0733-00 | Gear 3 Shift Incorrect Ratio |
| P1DA8-00 | Incorrect Gear Ratio Clutch A B or D Defective |
| P1D92-00 | Incorrect Gear Ratio - Clutch 4 Defective |
Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions
The primary diagnostic condition for this TSB is the presence of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) along with one of the specified DTCs (P0733-00, P1DA8-00, or P1D92-00) in a vehicle with at least 7,000 miles (11,265 km). If these conditions are met, the repair procedure outlined in the TSB should be followed. If these conditions are not met, the bulletin does not apply.
Important Warnings
Owners and technicians should be aware of several critical warnings and notes:
- Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Transmission Control Module Assembly (TCMA) Sensitivity: "The Transmission Control Module (TCM), or Transmission Control Module Assembly (TCMA) is extremely sensitive to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Always use a ground strap and follow the ESD guidelines in Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive Devices. Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the TCM/TCMA."
- TCM Adaptation Procedure Required: "If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TCM Adaptation Procedure. Refer to the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/Service Library under: Service Info>08 - Electrical/8E - Electronic Control Modules/ Module, Transmission Control/ Module Programming."
- Normal Transmission Debris: "It is normal for the transmission to have fine debris present in the oil pan and stuck to the magnets. Burnt oil and debris do not warrant a transmission replacement for D piston seal failure."
- Output Shaft Seal Installation: "The seal must be installed flush with the case. Driving the seal deeper could damage the seal causing a leak."
- Output Flange Nut Staking: "The nut must be staked to prevent vibration from backing the nut out or loose."
- Unique Transmission Fluid: "A unique transmission fluid has been developed for this transmission. This fluid is NOT compatible with ATF+4 or any other current FCA US LLC transmission fluid. For specifics about this unique fluid see FLUIDS, LUBRICANTS AND GENUINE PARTS."
- SA Market Specific Note: "For SA market only, after applying this TSB, it is not necessary to send DID-I or DID-A."
Repair Procedure Summary
The repair procedure for the 850RE D clutch involves a comprehensive disassembly and reassembly of the transmission components. The process begins by verifying the presence of the relevant DTCs and mileage. Technicians will then proceed with removing the torque converter, and for 4WD vehicles, the transmission housing extension. The output shaft seal, snap ring, and flange are then removed, followed by the transmission oil pan and gasket.
Further steps include disconnecting the Hydraulic Impulse Oil Storage (H.I.S) connector (if equipped), removing the valve body assembly, Output Speed Sensor (OSS), and the electrical harness insulator using special tools like Guide Sleeve 10377. The fluid port, fluid transfer tube, and input shaft O-ring are also removed. The oil pump housing is carefully detached, and the B clutch spring damper and park pawl lock rod guide plate are removed.
The core of the repair involves removing the input/output shaft and P4 annulus drum assembly, positioning it on a Press Fixture 8925A, and then removing the B clutch pack. The P1 annulus/B clutch hub assembly, thrust bearing, holding plate, P1 planetary carrier, input shaft with P2 planetary carrier, and P2 annulus/P3 sun gear are systematically removed. Crucially, the D clutch drum is removed, and the P4 planetary carrier/output shaft lock ring is replaced with a new one.
Reassembly follows the reverse order, with careful attention to installing new components where specified, such as the new P4 planetary carrier/output shaft lock ring, new input shaft O-ring, and new oil pump cover retaining bolts. The valve body assembly, OSS, and HIS are reinstalled, ensuring correct alignment and torque specifications. The transmission oil pan, output shaft seal (using Seal Installer 9677), and extension housing (for 4x4) are reattached. For 2WD vehicles, a new output flange seal and nut are installed, with the nut requiring staking to prevent loosening.
Finally, the torque converter is installed, and for WL 4x4 models, an O-ring/seal is added to the output shaft. The transmission is pre-filled and installed back into the vehicle. The entire process concludes with using wiTECH to perform a Quick Learn Procedure and clear any remaining DTCs. This detailed process ensures a proper repair for the Jeep Wrangler 850RE D clutch and similar affected vehicles.
