2019-2022 BMW Active Air Flap Extended Warranty

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) has issued Service Information Bulletin SIB 01 03 25 to announce an Extended Limited Warranty (ELW) for the Radiator Grilles Lower Active Air Flap Assembly. This extended coverage applies to certain 2019-2022 BMW G05 (X5 SAV), G06 (X6 SAC), G07 (X7 SAV), and G20 (3 Series Sedan) models, addressing potential defects in materials and/or workmanship.

The ELW extends coverage for this specific component to "15 years / 150,000 miles", whichever comes first, calculated from the vehicle's original in-service or delivery date. This means owners of affected vehicles, including those experiencing a 2019-2022 BMW X5 active air flap fault, can have qualifying repairs performed under this extended warranty.

Symptoms of an Active Air Flap Fault

Owners may notice an operational issue with their vehicle's lower active air flap assembly. When this situation occurs, the vehicle's monitoring system may trigger specific warnings. These include the display of "check control messages (CCM)" and/or the illumination of the "Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)". These indicators signal that the vehicle has stored corresponding fault codes related to the active air flap system.

Diagnosis and Trigger Conditions

If you suspect an issue with your active air flap assembly, an authorized BMW center will first determine the vehicle's current software i-level. This can be done using the AIR system or the Key reader/Aftersales Workplace (AWP) application. Technicians will then perform a visual inspection of the lower active air flap. If further investigation is required, a Vehicle Test and additional corresponding diagnosis will be conducted. This may involve using a lower active air flap test plan to identify the root cause of the problem.

Important Warnings and Exclusions

It is crucial for owners to understand that this bulletin, SIB 01 03 25, is a notice of a limited warranty extension and NOT a notice of a Recall or Service Action. There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem.

This extended coverage specifically excludes lower air flap assembly damage or other issues caused by outside influences. Issues with the upper air flap assembly are also excluded from this extended coverage. Furthermore, repairs performed using non-genuine BMW parts and/or used BMW passenger car or light truck parts will not qualify for coverage. This extended warranty also does not cover repairs for ineligible vehicles or those operated and repaired outside the United States and Puerto Rico.

Owners should note that "Not all the Vehicle Models in the above Model Year(s) are included, for certain Models, inclusion is dependent and determined by the 'ending' production date information listed above." Before performing any repair or submitting a claim, it is essential to confirm that the vehicle has the Extended Limited Warranty coverage in the Warranty Vehicle Inquiry (WVI) "Vehicle Comments" section. Repair Procedure Summary

Required Parts and Materials

The main component that may require replacement is the "Air flaps, lower (assembly)". The specific part number should be determined by entering the vehicle's VIN/chassis number into either ETK (Electronic Parts Catalogue) or AIR, which will identify the correct part based on the vehicle's equipment and options. The required quantity for this part is 1.

Additionally, other materials and small parts not explicitly listed, such as fluids, lubricants, one-time use screws, nuts, and seals, must be selected from the Electronic Parts Catalogue or other approved BMW Group resources according to the respective vehicle type. These items should be invoiced separately under the Repair Code listed in this bulletin.

Claim Information for Authorized BMW Centers

Authorized BMW centers should claim this work using Repair Code 5174900200, designated for "G05 G06 G07 G20 US Air flap control, bottom". The following labor operations and their allowances apply:

If a Main labor code is used for another repair, technicians should use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead of 00 00 006, or exclude them (including 61 21 528) if the Vehicle Test is part of another repair. Labor operations 61 00 006 and 00 58 500 are not considered Main labor operations.

During the workshop visit, if the vehicle has other open programming and encoding Technical Campaign repairs, the programming and encoding procedure may only be invoiced once. Technicians should select one of these open Technical Campaigns to perform and submit for updating the vehicle to the required I-level or higher, which includes operations 00 00 006 or 00 00 556, 61 21 528, and 61 00 730. Any additional before and/or after work, including attaching labels, required by open campaigns must also be performed. All other open programming and encoding Campaign repairs should be closed as outlined in their respective Service Information Bulletins.

If the above situation does not apply, the additional flat rate labor operation code 61 00 730 for programming and encoding is claimable within the work procedure and coverage guidelines described in this bulletin. For specific procedures regarding diagnosis work time (WT), job/repair work time (WT), and claim comments, centers should refer to SI B01 01 20 or B01 07 20.

Reimbursement for Previous Customer-Pay Repairs

BMW NA will reimburse certain costs for qualifying customer-pay repairs performed prior to the release of this ELW. To request reimbursement for a prior repair, customers should submit their request online at www.BMW-RP.com, using the reference "BMW ELW Lower Active Air Flap 15Y150M".

The online process requires attaching legible PDF files of supporting documentation for the prior repair. This includes a completed page 2 checklist from the attachment, proof of payment (such as a repair order/invoice stamped "PAID", a cancelled check, or a signed credit/debit card receipt/statement), and documentation confirming the repair addressed a covered issue and was not due to outside influence. BMW NA reserves the right to adjust the reimbursed amount based on customary and reasonable costs. Illegible or fabricated documentation will not be accepted.

Customer Notification

Even though this is not a recall, BMW NA will be sending VIN-specific customer notification letters to inform owners about this extended warranty.
