Causes of Taillamp Moisture

BMW identifies two main situations that can lead to moisture inside the taillamps:

1. Normal Condensation: This occurs due to thermal and environmental conditions and is not considered a defect. It's a natural phenomenon where warm, moist air inside the taillamp housing condenses on cooler surfaces.
2. Defective Water/Moisture Entry: If water or moisture is present in the taillamp housing due to a leak or damage, this is considered a defect that requires attention.

Diagnosis and Correction

When BMW taillamp condensation is observed, the first step is to determine if it's a normal environmental condition or a defect. For normal condensation, no correction is typically needed. The taillamps are designed with venting to dissipate this moisture.

Normal condensation should dissipate within 24 hours if the vehicle is sitting in temperatures between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. If the taillamps do not dry out within this timeframe, or if there's visible water ingress, it indicates a potential defect. In such cases, the taillamp should be inspected for leaks or damage and replaced if necessary.

Repair Procedure Summary

If the moisture is determined to be a defect, the repair involves inspecting the taillamp for any signs of leaks or damage. If a defect is found, the affected taillamp assembly should be replaced.
