What is Service Action 93R3?

Audi has initiated Service Action 93R3 to address the compact/portable charging system in certain 2021-2024 Audi models. This proactive measure involves two key components: providing an updated 220V/240V charging unit cable and performing a software update for the compact/portable charging system.

The goal of this service action is to ensure the continued optimal performance and safety of your vehicle's charging capabilities. The Audi e-tron charging system update and cable replacement are performed by authorized Audi dealers.

Important Warnings and Owner Information

Owners should be aware of several critical details regarding Service Action 93R3:

  • Recall Coordination: "If Safety Recall 93U6 or Safety Recall 93U8 shows open in ELSA on the day of repair, dealers should perform the safety recall work and this service action during the same service visit."
  • Inventory Vehicles: "Dealers must ensure that every affected inventory vehicle has this campaign completed before delivery to consumers."
  • Owner Notification: Owner notification letters were scheduled to be sent in March 2024.
  • Campaign Expiration: This service action is available free of charge only until March 21, 2029. "Work must be performed on or before this date to be eligible for payment. Keep this expiration date in mind when scheduling customers for this action. If a customer wishes to have this work performed after the expiration date, your normal costs associated with this work will apply."
  • Required Items for Service: You must bring your vehicle's complete compact/portable charging system kit, including all charging cables that belong with it, to your repair appointment.
  • Coverage Limitation: "Only the original portable charging kit that came with the vehicle from the factory is covered under this Service Action. Other style/brands of portable charging kits are not covered."

Detailed Repair Procedure

The repair for Service Action 93R3 involves a software update for the portable charger and a cable replacement. The general steps performed by an authorized Audi technician are as follows:

1. Initial Verification

Technicians begin by checking the vehicle's VIN in the ELSA system's "Campaigns/Actions screen" to confirm that Service Action 93R3 is "open" and applicable. If the status is "closed," no further work is required. It is a critical repair step that "All Safety Recalls must be completed prior to completing this campaign," and if multiple software update campaigns are open, they must be performed in order of their start date, with the oldest performed first.

2. Portable Charging Kit Check

The technician verifies the presence of the original portable charging kit in the vehicle. If the kit is present, the procedure continues to Section C. If the original portable charging kit is not with the vehicle, and the customer states they no longer have possession, the customer must sign the repair order (RO) acknowledging this. For inventory or used vehicles without an associated customer, the absence of the kit is documented on the RO. In these cases, the procedure skips directly to Section E.

3. Software Update Process

This is a key part of the Audi e-tron charging system update. The portable charger software is updated using specific diagnostic tools:

  • A connection is established between the Diagnostic Tester (-VAS6150X/6160X- or equivalent) and the Mobile Charger -E943- using the Diagnostic Adapter for High-Voltage Charging System (-VAS611009KIT-).
  • The 110V cable (P88) from the vehicle's portable charging system kit is required to power the portable charger during the software update.
  • In the ODIS system, technicians enter "AUDILADEKABELMINI" in the VIN field and ensure "work with Guided Fault Finding" is checked.
  • If an error occurs during automatic VIN identification, the technician presses "OK" and manually identifies the charger. This involves selecting "manual" Vehicle identification, entering "AUDILADEKABELMINI" in the VIN field, selecting "All external components" for the Model, and then selecting Apply.
  • Under the Special Functions tab, technicians select "SVM - Code Input" and enter SVM code 93R3A458, following the on-screen prompts. The vehicle's VIN is entered when prompted.
  • Upon exiting GFF, the diagnostic log is sent to GFF Paperless.

4. Charging Cable Provision

A new 220V/240V charge cable, part number 7PP-971-678-GA (CHARGE CBL), is provided. This cable is placed with the portable charging system kit. It's noted that the original 220V/240V cable may have been removed during previous Safety Recalls 93U6 or 93U8.

5. Completion and Documentation

Once the campaign is completed, the technician stamps the repair order as per Audi's compliance procedures. Campaign completion stamps are available for ordering through the Compliance Label Ordering Portal.
