Summary"DWA (Anti-theft Alarm System): False Alarm Is Triggered Intermittently. INFORMATION Parts replacement will not solve the problem if one or more of the conditions described in the situation above caused the alarm to trigger. The sensitivity of the interior ultrasonic sensor cannot be reduced. If the customer wishes to park the vehicle with the sunroof tilted, the window partially open, and/or in an area with excessive local noise, the interior sensor must be switched off by using the following procedure: Press the lock button on the remote control twice in succession. The LEDs flash in short succession for approx. 2 seconds. The interior ultrasonic sensor is switched off until the vehicle is unlocked and locked the next time. NOTE: This information can be found in the Owner's Manual in the ""Controls"" section under ""Switching off the tilt alarm sensor and interior movement detector."""

Summary"PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS. SUBJECT Service Action: Retrofit of Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Internal corrosion can form in the engine coolant temperature sensor. This corrosion leads to internal bridging of the contacts, which can cause an inaccurate engine temperature reading. This false reading can lead to difficulty in the engine starting and/or a ""Service Engine Soon"" lamp being illuminated."

Summary"Discharged Battery: Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed. MINI electrical systems and advancements in vehicle technology have resulted in an increased demand on the vehicle battery. This SI will help the dealer handle ""discharged battery"" complaints. A discharged battery can have various causes, most unrelated to the battery. A failed battery is often the symptom and not the cause. A fully serviceable battery fails when an electrical component causes the battery to discharge; the battery becomes internally damaged and must be replaced. For more information, refer to http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-42B.htm. For this reason, replacing the battery is not usually a permanent repair. The cause of the discharged battery must be analyzed in order to guarantee a proper repair. To repair the vehicle properly the first time in the workshop, the diagnostic test plans must be performed to completion, with all results taken into consideration. Without performing the energy diagnosis test plan, the root cause of the discharged battery cannot be identified. This increases the chances of a repeat repair. CAUSE Discharged battery."

SummaryChange in Thermostat Electrical Connector on Replacement Engine Harness. Vehicles produced from 3/2013 are no longer equipped with an engine coolant thermostat that incorporates the engine coolant temperature sensor (thermostat P/N 11 53 7 647 751). The engine coolant temperature sensor is now an individual component. To accommodate this component change, there was also a production change to the engine wiring harness; this also includes the replacement engine harnesses for earlier produced vehicles. The replacement harness is no longer equipped with the four pin connector for the thermostat / engine coolant temperature sensor, but two separate twopin connectors, one for the coolant thermostat and one for the engine coolant temperature sensor. *The N16 engine switched production to the 11 53 7 534 521 thermostat in 3/2012. This thermostat, like the new 751, incorporates a separate engine coolant temperature sensor. The connectors on the 521 thermostat will not match up to the connectors on a new, replacement engine harness. The 521 thermostat will need to be replaced with the 751 thermostat during this repair.

Replace the defective canvas convertible top. Refer to ISTA Repair Instruction 54 34 120, ""Replacing soft top fabric."" Note: The following repair steps must be performed before the new top is installed to prevent a repeat repair for wear marks. 2. With the defective canvas cover removed, the current main pillars must be replaced. Refer to ISTA Repair Instruction 54 34 996, ""Replacing left or right main pillar."" 3. The current locking mechanisms and bump stops must be replaced as well. Refer to ISTA Repair Instruction 54 34 196, ""Removing and installing / replacing both stowage locks."" The repair kit* needed is listed below. 7. Reinstall the removed parts in the reverse order of their removal. 8. Operate the top several times to quality check the repair."

SummarySI M12 02 12 Engine Electrical Systems April 2013 Technical Service . After reprogramming the vehicle to integration level R056-11-11-503 (ISTA/P P45.1.3.0) or higher, one of the following fault codes are stored in the DME fault memory: Vehicles with N16 engine: * 2F42 Engine ventilation heating, Control The Service Engine Soon lamp is not illuminated. Vehicles with N18 engine: * 37DE Engine ventilation, heating, triggering: open circuit The Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated. CAUSE Due to a DME software change, the diagnostic monitoring capability is improved for the engine ventilation heating system. However, a fault will be stored in the fault memory because the engine ventilation heater circuit has a malfunction currently present.

SummaryCHAMP2: Integrated Cooling Fan Is Noisy Intermittently. INFORMATION Do not replace parts and do not perform a repair attempt! Explain to the customer that this only happens at high ambient temperatures, which keep the fan running after the ignition is turned off. This Service Information will be updated as soon as a solution is available. A software solution is expected to be available with ISTA/P 2.49.0 in March 2013. New integration level: R056-13-03-501 or higher.

Summary"N16 Engine: FC 2D9B Knock Sensor, Signal Is Stored in the DME. Certain areas of the US experience extremely cold climate conditions during the winter months, which can cause the Service Engine Soon lamp to illuminate while the engine temperature is increasing to full operating temperature. The following fault may be stored in the DME: FC 2D9B Knock Sensor, Signal While performing test plan B1214 M KNOCK SENSOR, the following error message will be displayed: ""An error has occurred during execution of a service program. Fault code: 61/3."" This error in the test plan will not allow diagnosis to continue. The test plan error will be repaired with ISTA/D 2.36.0. CAUSE A DME calibration error in the knock sensor diagnostics results in an increased sensitivity threshold to cold temperatures."

SummaryErroneous "Service due" Message Though Brake Lining Thickness Sufficient. The CBS data calculated for the remaining distance of the front and/or rear brake pads does not agree with the actual brake pad thickness. The yellow brake lining service due indicator illuminates even though the pad thickness is greater than the minimum wear limit (approximately 3.7 mm); the brake wear sensor has not yet been activated (from a thickness of approx. 4.2 mm). In some cases, the red warning message may already be active. The CBS front/rear brake display is based on a mathematical calculation. Various influences are incorporated into this calculation (for example, vehicle speed, brake pressure, and rotor temperature). Due to changing driving characteristics and/or unfavorable environmental conditions, the calculated remaining distance may differ from actual pad thickness.
