  This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician about the calculation and operation of the engine oil life monitor. The monitor calculates the percent of oil life remaining, based on 3 pathways. The first pathway for oil life calculation is engine revolutions. The second pathway for oil life calculation is the mileage form the last rest for all General Motors powertrains except the Volt. The third pathway for oil life calculation is the amount of time the oil is in the engine. The Volt uses a 2 year timer instead of 1 year. It also uses the engine revolution counter. It does not use the mileage pathway to count down.

Technician will need to use a rubber mallet and lightly tapping on the belt molding moving it toward the (A) pillar area. Then remove the belt molding, use a suitable piece of rubber and glue it to the back side of the of the belt molding to extend it to fill the gap.

THIS CAN CAUSE A DEAD BATTERY IF THE VEHICLE IS NOT STARTED FOR APPROXIMATELY 4 DAYS. THIS CONDITION CAN OCCUR EVEN IF THE ONSTAR® SYSTEM IS NOT ACTIVE. DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE ONSTAR® MODULE. Technician will be able to use Global Diagnostic System 2 to duplicate the concern by commanding a purge and seal on the Evaporative Emissions System. A dual-pulse injection strategy is utilized during engine cold start to reduce the time required to bring the catalytic converter up to operating temperature. This split injection strategy lasts for about 60 seconds on cold start. This process may cause the customer to see increased black smoke during cold start and should be considered normal.
