SummaryEngine Lubricating Oil - Replenishment. Customer statement / workshop findings Engine lubricating oil lamp illuminated on driver instrument panel. Engine lubricating oil requires topping up between services. Technical background: In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified running-in periods consume more oil during the running-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the running-in period. Refer to the Owners Manual for specific running-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, ambient temperature and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue, and the oxidation level of the oil. Certain driving conditions may negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This can occur while the vehicle is operated in city driving conditions, for example: stop and go traffic with extended idle periods

Water is in the headlight (illustration 2a) / front fog lamp (illustration 2b), big drips. Technical background 1. Damp air settles on the inner lens of the headlights/fog lamps, with recognisable misting in certain weather conditions (comparable with the steaming up of spectacle lenses when entering a warm room in winter or of the bathroom mirror after a shower). 2. Leak on the headlights/front fog lamps. For example through open covers, a damaged seal of the cap or similar.

SummaryTicking noise from engine bay. Customer statement / workshop findings: Ticking noise emanating from rear of Bank 1 cylinder head Technical background: Noise from failed vacuum pump. Measure: A specific vacuum pump failure is known to create a ticking noise. This ticking noise, on initial inspection, is easily misinterpreted as a fault in the valve train or fuel injector, when in reality it is more likely to be produced by a defective vacuum pump. Therefore always ensure that this type of noise is identified precisely using a stethoscope. Specifically use the stethoscope to check the vacuum pump located at the rear of Bank 1 cylinder head, when this is found to be the origin of the noise then change the vacuum pump and retest.

Technical background: Deviations in the country-specific fuel specifications can lead to carbon deposits on the injectors. If pronounced these deposits can lead to spark plug fouling, cylinder leakage and fouled injectors all influencing combustion in the cylinder. As a result the above event entries are logged in the engine control unit. Measure: - Follow the Misfire best practice TPI 2051187 in order to confirm that the root cause of the misfire is excessive cylinder carbonisation leading to excessive cylinder leakage/fouling

SummaryCustomer statement / workshop findings: Unable to remove Accessory valve caps, Figure 1 shows an example of the caps. Technical background: We have observed instances where the caps have been difficult to remove once fitted, the issue is caused by corrosion. The valve stem itself is made from aluminium and the accessory valve caps are chromium plated brass, it is possible under certain environmental conditions, particularly winter road salt, for corrosion to take place between these dissimilar metals. Measure: The solution is to apply a thin smear of silicon-based grease, such as Dow Corning high vacuum grease, to the external threads of the valve stem prior to fitting the accessory valve cap. Grease should be applied any time the cap is removed and grease is not evident
