2021-2024 Jeep Compass/Renegade Engine Oil Leak TSB

Owners of 2021-2024 Jeep Compass and Renegade vehicles might notice an oil leak from the engine compartment or around the engine/transmission coupling. This TSB applies to 2021-2024 Jeep Compass and Renegade models built on or before November 03, 2023 (MDH 1103XX) equipped with the following engines:

• 1.3L I4 Turbo MAir DI Engine with ESS (Sales Code EYF)
• 1.3L I4 Turbo MAir DI Engine (Sales Code EYH)
• 1.0L I3 Turbo Engine with ESS (Sales Code EKA)
• 1.5L I4 DOHC Turbo MHEV Engine (Sales Code EYP)

Diagnosis and Inspection

To accurately diagnose the source of the oil leak, technicians must first establish its origin. This involves a thorough inspection to ensure the leak is not coming from other common areas such as the engine head, oil pan, or crankshaft oil seal. The TSB specifies that this repair should only be performed if leaks from external engine components can be definitively ruled out.

During the diagnostic process, a dye relevant liquid is added to the engine oil, and the engine is run for 30 minutes to help identify the leak source after the flywheel is removed. Visual inspection of the cap area and lower engine components is crucial. It is important to identify the source of the Jeep Compass oil leak as accurately as possible and to document the intervention with photographs.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair outlined in TSB 09-005-25 involves replacing the engine valley cap. The procedure includes several steps:

1. Add dye to the engine oil and run the engine to pinpoint the leak after flywheel removal.
2. Remove the engine flywheel lower guard, following detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/Service Library under 1024B52.
3. Visually inspect for oil around the cap area, lower engine, oil pan, and nearby components. If necessary, remove the flywheel for a detailed analysis of the cap area and rear crankshaft oil seal.
4. Remove the engine flywheel, referring to DealerCONNECT/Service Library procedures 1024B20 for automatic transmission vehicles or 1024B15 for dual clutch gearbox vehicles.
5. Inspect the engine valley cap for evidence of an oil leak.
6. If an oil leak is confirmed from the engine valley cap, remove and discard the old cap.
7. Thoroughly clean the engine valley thread.
8. Install a new engine valley cap, tightening it to 27 N·m (20 ft. lbs.).
9. Clean any residual oil from the affected area.
10. Reinstall the engine flywheel, again following the appropriate DealerCONNECT/Service Library procedures (1024B20 or 1024B15).
11. Install the engine flywheel lower guard, referencing DealerCONNECT/Service Library procedure 1024B52.
