Symptoms

Owners of affected 2021-2024 BMW X-Series vehicles may experience one or more of the following symptoms related to their panoramic sunroof:

Water Leaks

Water entry into the vehicle from the sunroof area, near the trunk, or on the front carpets. This indicates a failure in the sunroof's sealing or drainage system, potentially leading to interior dampness or damage.

Wind Noise

Excessive noise entering the vehicle from the sunroof while driving, particularly noticeable at speeds around 30 mph or higher. This can manifest as a rushing sound, indicating compromised sealing or alignment.

Static Noise

Noises heard while driving, typically over rough road surfaces, even when the sunroof is not operating. These can include:

  • Rattle / Tapping Noise: Can be metallic or non-metallic, suggesting loose components.
  • Humming or Crackling Noise: Often indicates vibrations or contact between parts.

Function Noise

Noises heard specifically when operating the sunroof glass or the roller sunshade. These can include:

  • Oscillation Noise: A rhythmic sound during movement.
  • Squealing or Chattering Noise: High-pitched or rapid, repetitive sounds.
  • Scratching / Catching Noise: Sounds indicating friction or obstruction.
  • Rubbing / Tapping Noise: Suggests contact between moving parts.
  • Creaking Noise: A groaning sound, often from flexing components.
  • Popping Noise: Sudden, sharp sounds.
  • Humming or Crackling Noise: Similar to static noise, but occurring during operation.

Causes and Repair Procedures

The diagnostic resource provides repair instructions for over 30 potential causes related to water entry, operational noise, or wind noise. Technicians are advised to utilize the attached interactive diagnostic troubleshooting document based on the customer complaint.

Causes of Water Leaks

  • Front Center Seal Loose/Shrinking: If a gap is visible near the end of the seal on the front glass, excessive water can enter. The repair involves replacing the seal according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 052. Technicians should also refer to B54 04 21.
  • Side Seal Loose/Shrinking: Gaps near the ends or twists in the side seal can lead to water entry. The repair involves replacing the seal according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 050.
  • Body Seal Not Installed/Attached: If the sunroof perimeter seal is detached, improperly installed, or shows gaps/wrinkles, water can ingress. The repair involves inspecting the seal for defects and replacing it according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 055.
  • Drain Tubes Not Connected at Top: Water leaks near the trunk area or front carpets can occur if drain tubes are not properly connected at the sunroof frame. The repair involves checking and reconnecting the drain tube connections at the sunroof.
  • Front Drain Tube Twisted/Kinked: Water leaks near the front or rear carpets may be caused by twisted or kinked drain tubes. Technicians should remove A-pillar kick panels to check and reposition the hose to remove the kink. If the kink cannot be removed, Attachment 1 of SI B54 11 19 provides further repair instructions. This is noted as "one of the more common issues." The document shows examples of twisted, kinked, and slightly kinked tubes.
  • Drain Tubes Not Connected at Bottom: Water leaks near the trunk area or front carpets can also result if drain tubes are not properly connected at the A-Pillar or D-pillar at the bottom. The repair involves ensuring the drain grommet is correctly seated in the A-Pillar.
  • Drain Tubes Clogged (Dirt/Debris): Water leaks onto the carpets if drain tubes are clogged. The repair involves verifying water flow, checking for twists/kinks first, then gently blowing air through the drain tube to force debris out. If the clog cannot be cleared, a TSARA case should be submitted for assistance.
  • Aero-Acoustic Seal Not Installed / Stuck: A water leak in the front can be caused by an incorrectly installed or deformed aero-acoustic seal. The repair involves checking if the seal is properly seated and in good condition. If not, it should be reseated or replaced, and the body seal may also need replacement according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 055.
  • Aero-Acoustic Seal Vent/Drain Holes Blocked/Flash: Water leaks in the front can also occur if the aero-acoustic seal has flash or blockage at its front vent/drain holes. The repair involves checking the seal at the front corners and replacing the aero-acoustic seal if the holes are blocked by flash.
  • Missing Butyl Between Side Guides and Beam: A water leak running between the front/rear beam and side guide may indicate missing butyl sealer. The repair emphasizes ensuring all other water management components (seals, drains) are checked first, and proper water testing procedures are followed ("DO NOT OVERFLOW THE SEALED TRACK"). If necessary, the frame should be replaced according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 261.
  • Dyko Foam/Seal Water Intrusion into Dry Side of Channel: If a water leak occurs near the middle drain channel, the position of the seal and foam should be checked. For vehicles produced before March 26, 2020, foam (a) is relevant; for those after March 26, 2021, seal (b) is relevant; for in-between production, neither is present. The repair involves checking the position of the seal/foam and removing it if deformed or damaged. If a new rubber seal is not available, it is approved to use the foam for repair (Part Number: 9466049-02).
  • Rear Beam Dyko Seal Not Installed: Water ingress in the trunk area may occur if the rear beam seal is not installed. The repair involves checking if the seal is properly seated, loosening bolts to inspect, and replacing the frame according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 261 if the seal is completely missing.
  • Glass Panels Not Aligned: Misalignment of the rear glass (left to right, Y-axis), front/rear glass (front to rear, X-axis), or front/rear glass height (Z-axis) can lead to excessive water entry. Repairs involve checking seals, adjusting glass panels according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 002, or replacing the frame (REP 54 13 261) if alignment issues persist.

Causes of Wind Noise

  • Front Center Seal Loose/Shrinking: Wind noise heard at speeds of 30 Mph can be caused by a gap near the end of the seal on the front glass. The repair involves replacing the seal according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 052.
  • Side Seal Loose/Shrinking: Gaps near the ends or twists in the side seal can lead to wind noise at 30 mph. The repair involves replacing the seal according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 050. If a knob or locking feature is missing on the rear glass panel, the panel itself may need replacement.
  • Body Seal Not Attached: If the body seal is detached or improperly installed, it can cause wind noise. The repair involves checking if the seal is flush to the vehicle (no loose areas/wrinkles) and replacing it if damaged according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 055.
  • Glass Not Flush: Rushing wind noise heard from the center of the glass indicates that the glass is not flush. Tape can be used to isolate the noise and identify the non-flush area. The repair involves adjusting both sunroof glass panels according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 002.

Causes of Static Noise

  • Rear Glass Bracket Loose: A metallic noise heard while driving over rough road surfaces suggests loose rear glass brackets. The repair involves inspecting bracket screws (bracket to frame, not glass to bracket) for cross-threading. Damaged screws should be replaced, and loose screws tightened to 6.1 Nm. If screws cannot be tightened correctly, the frame may require replacement.
  • Extra Screw: A metallic "rolling" noise heard during acceleration/deceleration may be due to an extra screw that fell into the track during production. The screw is not missing from any location. The repair involves removing the extra screw; no additional repairs are necessary if other screws are correctly installed.
  • Loose Frame to Body Screw / Frame to Glass Screw: Rattling noise from the roof area can indicate one or more loose sunroof frame screws. The repair involves inspecting screws for cross-threading, replacing damaged screws, and retorquing frame screws to 5.4 Nm and glass panel screws to 4.5 Nm according to ISTA/AIR repair instructions. Headliner clips must be engaged and not broken.
  • Acoustic Seal Loose: A rattle or groaning noise heard while driving over rough road surfaces, which stops with upward pressure on the glass, indicates interference between the sunroof glass and the acoustic seal mounted to the sunroof frame. This seal will not cause a water leak. The repair involves slightly lowering the glass (within specification) to increase pressure between the glass and the seal.
  • Ambient Light Covers Loose: Rattle heard from plastic cover tapping on the glass panel (front or rear glass) when driving on rough road surfaces. This specifically affects vehicles with SA407 (Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof). The repair involves attempting to insulate with felt tape. If insulation is not possible, replace the glass panel according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 250.
  • Ambient Light Clip Loose/Not Installed: A loose clip for the ambient light harness tapping on the glass or contacting the sunroof mechanism can cause static noise. This also affects vehicles with SA407 (Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof). The repair involves correctly installing the harness clip.
  • Cable Tube Clip Not Installed: A humming or crackling sound when opening the sunshade, or plastic rattling while driving on rough roads, can be caused by an uninstalled cable tube clip. The repair involves engaging/setting the clip correctly. If the tube is damaged and noise persists, replace the cassette according to repair instructions.

Causes of Function Noise

  • Motor Noise: An oscillation noise present from the adjustment motor when the shade or glass is moving. The repair involves swapping/replacing the motor and retesting. If the motor is found to be the cause, replace it according to ISTA/AIR repair instruction REP 67 61 580.
  • Cable Ratcheting: A quiet oscillating/chattering noise present when moving only the sunshade. The repair involves inspecting the sunroof frame for misalignment or a burr on the cable guide. If damage is found, replace the frame according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 261.
  • Guide Rail Not Enough Lubrication: A squealing or chattering noise heard when moving the sunshade, typically on Alcantara (suede) equipped vehicles. The repair involves cleaning and lubricating the sunroof guides. If noise persists, replace the sunshade according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 548.
  • PDF Rail Burr: A scratching/catching noise heard while the shade is moving. The repair involves removing the burr on the edge of the PDF rail. If the noise is still present, replace the cassette frame according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 261.
  • Guide Shoe Not Installed Correctly: A rubbing/tapping noise heard when glass is moved. The repair involves replacing the mechanism according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 515.
  • Wind Deflector Pivot Point Loose/Broken: A creaking noise present while the wind deflector raises/lowers, potentially causing the sunroof to reverse due to anti-trap when closing. The repair involves replacing the pivot point and wind deflector according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 090.
  • Wind Deflector Excess Butyl: A popping noise heard when the wind deflector raises/lowers. The repair involves removing excess butyl to allow the wind deflector to move freely.
  • Relief Cable Tube Not Installed: A humming or crackling noise present when opening the glass or sunshade. The repair involves replacing the frame according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 261.
  • Mechanic Arm Burr: A clicking sound present when the glass is opened to vent. The repair involves inspecting the pivot area for a burr and removing it. If the burr cannot be found or repaired, replace the sunroof mechanisms according to ISTA/AIR instructions REP 54 13 515.

Important Warnings for Owners and Technicians

  • For any vehicle where a defect is found that is NOT included in the diagnostic troubleshooting document, a TSARA INFO case must be submitted with feedback/photos for product quality improvements.
  • If the vehicle cannot be diagnosed using the troubleshooting document, or if additional diagnostic assistance or information is needed, a TSARA reply requested case should be submitted.
  • Technicians must reference the exact issue found in their warranty notes ("the story") and include the title of the slide related to the issue for quality improvement tracking.
  • Missing foam/seal will NOT CAUSE A WATER LEAK!! DO NOT REPLACE THE FFRAME FOR THIS. This is a critical point regarding the Dyko foam/seal issue.
  • When addressing missing butyl between side guides and beams, technicians must "ENSURE PROPER WATER TESTING PROCEDURES ARE BEING FOLLOWED (DO NOT OVERFLOW THE SEALED TRACK)".
  • The acoustic seal, if loose, will not cause a water leak into the vehicle and should not be replaced to solve a water leak on the panoramic roof.
