2025 BMW X3 Central Bass Speaker Replacement TSB

Symptoms

Owners may notice that a newly installed central woofer (bass speaker) in their 2025 BMW X3 will not function. This issue specifically arises after a replacement of one or both central bass speakers.

Cause

The root cause of the malfunction is a redesign of the replacement central woofer (bass speaker). Due to this hardware change, a vehicle programming conversion procedure is required to ensure correct operation. The original sound processing in the Receiver Audio Module (RAM02) is unable to properly actuate the redesigned central woofers without this conversion.

Important Warnings

It is crucial to understand that the new version of the central bass speakers and the older version (part number PN 65 13 5 A70 783) CANNOT be mixed in the vehicle. If one central woofer needs to be exchanged with an updated speaker, the other central woofer must also be inspected. If it is a first-generation central woofer (PN 65 13 5 A70 783), it must also be replaced with the updated part. This applies to early generation vehicles produced up to and including December 2024.

Repair Procedure Summary

When a central woofer (bass speaker) replacement is necessary, technicians must replace both central speakers with the updated parts. Following the physical replacement, a programming conversion procedure called "Conversion of Central Bass" must be performed using the ISTA diagnostic system. This involves adding the K-word “LSTZ” to the Vehicle Order, which modifies the sound output profile in the RAM02 and enables the new central woofers to operate correctly.

The programming steps include:

1. Connecting a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (refer to SIB 04 23 10) to the vehicle.
2. Connecting the ISTA 4 programming system to the vehicle.
3. Selecting "Conversion of Central Bass" within ISTA via the path: Vehicle Management > Vehicle Modification > Conversion > "Conversion of Central Bass".
4. Determining and accepting the measures plan.
5. Working through the measures plan to program, encode, and enable the control units.
6. Following any rework list and performing a vehicle test, then deleting the fault memory if needed.

ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software during this process.

Required Tools or Parts

For this repair, technicians will need:

• A BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (refer to SIB 04 23 10).
• The ISTA 4 programming system.
• Replacement central woofers, specifically the updated version (e.g., part number PN 65 13 5 B5B 1B2, ALEV 3), as the older part number PN 65 13 5 A70 783 is no longer available for replacement through ETK.

Claim Information

This repair is covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program, when applicable. The repair code should be submitted in conjunction with an applicable covered Central Woofer replacement. Labor operations for this procedure include:

• 65 13 210 or 65 13 710: Removing and installing/replacing the subwoofer.
• 00 00 006 or 00 00 556: Carrying out a vehicle test.
• 61 21 528: Supporting voltage of the vehicle electrical system / recharging vehicle battery.
• 61 00 730: Programming/encoding control unit(s).
