Cause

The root cause of the incorrect battery SoH display is a software error within the Storage Management Electronics (SME). This error prevents the SME from accurately calculating and reporting the battery's true State of Health, leading to the misleading 100% display.

Repair Procedure Summary

To correct the BMW i5 battery SoH error, the Storage Management Electronics (SME) require reprogramming. The repair involves updating the vehicle's software to a minimum I-level of G070-25-07-560 or higher. This can be achieved through two primary methods:

• Remote Software Upgrade (RSU): This is the preferred method. Technicians should follow the instructions outlined in SI B09 01 25 for performing the RSU procedure.
• ISTA Programming: If RSU is not available for a particular vehicle, the software update must be performed using the ISTA programming system. This requires ISTA version 4.56.1 or higher, with an estimated release date of October 24, 2025.
