Symptoms

Owners of affected 2022-2024 BMW i4 vehicles may experience a loss of traction or wheel slip in certain driving situations. This can be followed by a throttle or torque requirement that places undue stress on the axle shafts. Over time, this stress can lead to damage, potentially causing the drive shaft to break. This issue directly relates to potential BMW i4 axle shaft damage.

Cause

The root cause of this issue is identified as unfavorable software within the Electric Drive Unit. This software configuration can contribute to the conditions that lead to axle shaft damage.

Repair Procedure Summary

To correct the issue, BMW technicians will program the Electric Drive Unit with updated software. The update can be performed using one of two methods, aiming to achieve software I-level S18A-25-11-530 or later.

1. Remote Software Upgrade (RSU): This is the preferred method for updating the vehicle software. Technicians will follow detailed instructions outlined in Service Information (SI) B09 01 25 to carry out the RSU procedure.
2. ISTA Programming: If the RSU method is not available for a specific vehicle, the software will be updated via ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application). This requires ISTA version 4.56.3x, which was planned for release from November 11, 2025.

This Service Action SIB 12 14 25 ensures that the Electric Drive Unit's software is optimized to prevent the conditions that could lead to axle shaft damage.

Only one flat rate labor operation code can be used for claim submission. If other programming and encoding Technical Campaign repairs (such as 00 00 006, 00 00 556, 61 21 528, and 61 00 730) are open, this Service Action should be selected to perform the update. For additional diagnostic procedures, technicians may refer to SI B01 01 20 or SI B01 07 20.

Important Warnings

If your vehicle is simultaneously affected by another Technical Campaign or repair that also requires programming of the control units, the programming work may only be invoiced once by the dealer. Owners should be aware that a reimbursement request for qualifying prior customer-pay repairs related to this software update is not likely to be approved by BMW, as the remedy involves a software update issued with this Service Information Bulletin.
