2019-2025 Audi Front Seat Belt Twisted TSB

Symptoms

Owners of various 2019-2025 Audi models, including the Audi e-tron, may notice that the front seat belt is twisted. This condition can make the seat belt difficult to use or retract properly. The issue is identified as "69 Front seat belt twisted" in official communications.

Diagnosis and Trigger Conditions

Audi's Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 2058455/7 identifies that the belt webbing can become slightly twisted as it passes through the guide fitting on the belt height adjuster. This twisted pulling in of the belt webbing is exacerbated by the vehicle's "belt parking" function, which automatically retracts the belt. The twisting can occur when the latch plate is released and the occupant leaves the vehicle, causing a twist in the belt webbing at the point before the belt guide fitting. If the "belt parking" function then activates, the belt webbing may be twisted all the way around as it is pulled back into the guide fitting.

This solution is specifically applicable to vehicles equipped with reversible front belt tensioners, identified by PR numbers 7W1, 7W2, 7W3, or 7W4.

Important Warnings

• Do NOT remove the seat belt during the repair process for A6, A7, A8, and e-tron models. Only the B-Pillar trim needs to be removed.
• If your vehicle is outside of its warranty period, this Technical Service Bulletin is for informational purposes only, meaning the repair may not be covered by Audi.

• Revision 7 (Current): This revision included updates to the header (adding model years and PR code filter), condition description, technical background, production solution, service procedure, warranty claim types and labor operations, and the required parts and tools table.
• Revision 6 (March 29, 2023): This revision primarily updated the header by adding model years.
• Revision 5 (October 12, 2021): This revision modified the production solution timing and corrected an Elsa display issue in the header.

Production Solution

Optimized parts designed to prevent the e-tron twisted seat belt issue were implemented starting in week 28 of 2022.

Repair Procedure Summary

For Audi A6, A7, A8, and e-tron models experiencing an e-tron twisted seat belt, the repair involves replacing the seat belt guide. The procedure is as follows:

1. Remove B-Pillar Trim: Remove the B-Pillar trim on the affected side as described in the Workshop Manual. It is crucial to NOT remove the seat belt itself.
2. Remove Guide Fitting Bolt: Remove the bolt on the guide fitting at the top of the seat belt (refer to Figure 1, Position 3). This bolt can be reused, and its specific torque value is found in the current Workshop Manual.
3. Remove Old Belt Guide: Use your thumb to press the old plastic belt guide out of the steel part. First, disengage the old guide at the top (refer to Figure 3), then press out the lower part.
4. Untwist Seat Belt Webbing: With the old plastic part removed, the belt webbing can now be untwisted (refer to Figure 4).
5. Fit New Belt Guide: Install the new belt guide. First, engage the new plastic part at the bottom (refer to Figure 5, indicated by an arrow), then clip in the new part at the top until you hear the fastener click (refer to Figure 6).
6. Verify Secure Fastening: Ensure the new guide is securely fastened (refer to Figure 7, Position 6).
7. Check Rear Fastener: Verify the correct fitment of the rear fastener (refer to Figure 8, Position 7).
8. Refit Belt Guide Fitting: Secure the bolt on the guide fitting at the top of the seat belt, applying the correct torque from the Workshop Manual.
9. Check Belt Retraction: Pull the seat belt all the way out and confirm that the belt webbing retracts easily and correctly.
10. Refit B-Pillar Trim: Reinstall the B-Pillar trim.

For Audi Q8 models only, the procedure differs. Instead of replacing just the guide, the entire affected front seat belt assembly must be replaced as described in the Workshop Manual. Technicians must always order the latest part index according to the specific part number table provided in this TSB for this complaint. For all other complaints not related to a twisted seat belt, the older part indexes can still be fitted.

Required Parts

To address the e-tron twisted seat belt issue, the following parts may be required:

• For Audi A6, A7, A8, and e-tron (belt guide replacement):
  • Relay fitting, left front (driver side): 4K8 857 799 (Item 2 in diagram on page 10)
  • Relay fitting, right front (front passenger side): 4K8 857 800 (Item 1 in diagram on page 10)
  • If both front seat belts are affected, both part numbers must be ordered and fitted.
• For Audi Q8 (seat belt assembly replacement):
  • Three-point automatic seat belt with belt tensioner (various part numbers depending on the original part). Always order the new part number for this specific complaint:
    • Old 4M8.857.705* becomes New 4M8.857.705.C*
    • Old 4M8.857.706* becomes New 4M8.857.706.C*
    • Old 4M8.857.705.A* becomes New 4M8.857.705.D*
