Symptoms

Owners of affected Audi vehicles, including the Audi e-tron front seat belt twisted issue, may notice that the front seat belt webbing is twisted. This condition is often exacerbated by the vehicle's "belt parking" function, which can cause the belt to twist further as it retracts into the guide fitting.

Technical Background

Audi has identified that the seat belt webbing can become slightly twisted when it retracts after the latch plate is released. This twisting occurs as the belt passes through the guide fitting on the belt height adjuster. If the "belt parking" function (detailed in SSP 662 A8 (type 4N), page 69) is active, the belt webbing may twist completely as it pulls back into the guide. This issue specifically affects vehicles equipped with reversible front belt tensioners, identified by PR numbers 7W1, 7W2, 7W3, or 7W4.

Optimized parts designed to prevent this twisting were implemented in production starting in week 28 of 2022.

Important Warnings

• Do NOT remove the seat belt during the repair procedure for A6, A7, A8, and e-tron models. Only the B-Pillar trim and belt guide need to be removed.
• When ordering parts, only use parts listed in this TSB, as these supersede other part numbers found in ETKA. Do not use old part indexes for this specific complaint.
• If your vehicle is outside of its warranty period, this Technical Service Bulletin is for informational purposes only, meaning the repair may not be covered.

Repair Procedure Summary

For most affected Audi models (A6, A7, A8, and e-tron), the repair involves replacing the front seat belt guide. The general steps are as follows:

1. Access the B-Pillar: Remove the B-Pillar trim on the affected side as detailed in the Workshop Manual.
2. Remove Old Belt Guide: Locate the guide fitting at the top of the seat belt (Figure 1, Position 3). Remove the bolt from this fitting. The bolt can be reused, and its torque specification can be found in the Workshop Manual. Then, use your thumb to press the old plastic belt guide out of the steel part, disengaging the top first (Figure 3), and then pressing out the lower part.
3. Untwist Webbing: With the old guide removed, carefully untwist the belt webbing (Figure 4).
4. Install New Belt Guide: Fit the new belt guide by first engaging the new plastic part at the bottom (Figure 5, indicated by an arrow). Then, clip in the new part at the top until you hear the fastener click (Figure 6). Ensure the new guide is securely fastened (Figure 7, Position 6).
5. Reassembly and Check: Check the rear fastener for correct fitment (Figure 8, Position 7). Refit the belt guide fitting and secure the bolt according to Workshop Manual specifications. Pull the seat belt all the way out to ensure it retracts easily and correctly without twisting. Finally, refit the B-Pillar trim.

For Audi Q8 models only, the procedure differs significantly. Technicians must replace the entire affected front seat belt assembly as described in the Workshop Manual. It is critical to order the latest part index according to the specific table provided in this bulletin for this complaint only. For other complaints not related to twisting, older part indexes may still be used.

Required Parts

To address the Audi e-tron front seat belt twisted issue, specific new belt guides are required for most models:

• Driver side: 4K8 857 799 (Relay fitting, left front) - Quantity: 01 as needed
• Passenger side: 4K8 857 800 (Relay fitting, right front) - Quantity: 01 as needed

For Q8 models, the entire three-point automatic seat belt with belt tensioner must be replaced. The TSB provides a list of superseded part numbers, and it is crucial to always order the latest part index for this specific complaint. Examples of superseded part numbers include:

This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 2058455/7) outlines the warranty claim procedures for the front seat belt twisting issue. The service number is 6913, and the damage code is 0010. Labor operations vary depending on the number of belts modified and the specific model:

• Modify 1 front belt (Labor Operation: 6911 4999):
  • 40 Time Units (TU) for A6 and A7 family
  • 50 TU for A8, Audi e-tron quattro, and Audi e-tron sportback
• Modify 2 front belts (Labor Operation: 6911 5099):
  • 70 TU for A6 and A7 family
  • 90 TU for A8
  • 80 TU for Audi e-tron quattro, and Audi e-tron sportback
• Q8 Only (Remove and install):
