2019-2021 Audi e-tron Loose Door Trim TSB

Symptoms

Owners of affected 2019-2021 Audi e-tron vehicles may notice that the front door lower cover trim appears loose. Technicians have observed that the trim may look as if it has pulled away from the door.

Another common symptom is that the front door trim is not flush with the cover trim on the rear door. This visual misalignment, shown in Figure 1 of the bulletin, indicates that the trim pieces have become disengaged.

Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions

The disengagement of the door cover trim typically occurs due to sudden force. This can happen from contact with a foot during entry or exit from the vehicle, or from forceful closing of the front door.

This issue, which leads to the Audi e-tron loose door trim, is specifically known to affect only the front door cover trim.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair for the Audi e-tron loose door trim does not require removing the entire door cover trim from the vehicle. The primary goal is to reconnect the two main pieces of the lower door cover trim.

Before re-engagement, a 2K plastic adhesive (D 180 KU2 A1 or D 180 KU1 A1) is applied to prevent future disengagement. This bonding procedure should be applied to both front door lower cover trims, even if only one side shows symptoms. If the component parts of the trim are not yet disengaged, they can be carefully separated by pressing the inner trim upward and away from the outer shell to facilitate the repair, as illustrated in Figure 2.

The repair process begins by cleaning the areas where the inner and outer trim pieces meet. Technicians will use a cloth and all-purpose cleaner D 00940104 (or isopropanol alcohol) to thoroughly clean the surfaces, specifically the groove indicated by red arrows in Figure 3. Proper adhesive bonding relies on surfaces free of wax, oil, and dust. The cleaning should extend along the length of the trim as shown by blue lines in Figure 4, and the cleaned area must dry for at least 5 minutes.

Next, primer (3M™ AC77 Adhesive Primer or an alternative) is applied to both sides of the upper channel, as indicated by red arrows in Figure 5. After observing the required flash-off time for the primer, the upper channel is filled with 2K plastic adhesive D 180KU2A1 (or D 180KU1A1). The length of adhesive application is guided by the blue lines in Figure 6.

Immediately after applying the adhesive, the inner trim is pressed slightly upwards, then toward the outer shell, and finally back down to re-engage the two pieces correctly. Any excess adhesive must be removed immediately. To ensure the pieces remain together during the adhesive curing time, a strip of painter's tape is applied, as shown in Figure 7.
