Symptoms

Owners of 2019-2021 Audi A6, 2020-2021 A6 allroad, and 2021 RS 6 Avant vehicles may experience an Audi A6 sunroof rattle noise. This rattling noise typically sounds like it is coming from the central roof area or from the back of the sunroof assembly. The issue is most noticeable when driving on rough roads.

Several improvements have been implemented in production to abate these noises over time. Each improvement was introduced at different stages of the solution process. Consequently, the repairs described in this TSB may not be necessary if the improvement has already been implemented in your specific vehicle. It is crucial to ensure that all solutions detailed in this bulletin are addressed to fully resolve the issue.

This Technical Service Bulletin, 60 22 60 2054270/9, dated May 19, 2022, supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 60 number 21-57, which was dated November 12, 2021. The revisions include:

Repair Procedure Summary

All repairs must be performed on both the left and right sides of the sunroof assembly. The general steps involve disassembling parts of the sunroof, cleaning surfaces, applying felt tape and special lubricant, and then reassembling and adjusting the components.

1. Sunroof Panel Removal: The glass sunroof panel must be removed from the vehicle. This step should be performed according to the specific instructions provided in the Elsa Repair Manual.
2. Roller Shade Preparation: Close the roller shade by approximately 20 cm. This position is illustrated in Figure 1 of the TSB. Then, loosen the roller shade from its drive cable and push the material back until the retaining bolts are exposed (Figures 2-4). Once exposed, remove these bolts completely (Figure 5).
3. Surface Cleaning (Roller Shade Area): Remove the roller shade by sliding it backward. Thoroughly clean the mounting points as indicated in Figures 6 and 7. Use cleaning solution D 009 401 04 or an equivalent surface preparation solvent, such as isopropyl alcohol or an adhesion promoter, to prepare the surfaces for the adhesive-backed felt strip material.
4. Felt Tape Application (Roller Shade): Push down on the roller shade pan. Starting from the bottom of the guide rail, wrap the areas shown in Figure 8 with sections of felt tape 000 979 950. Fold the tape forward and over to the top of the guide rail, ensuring both the top and bottom of the tabs are isolated (Figure 9).
5. Reinstallation and Torque (Roller Shade): Apply thread locker to the screw hole depicted in Figure 10. Reinstall the bolts to the roller shade and torque them to 3 Nm (Figure 11).
6. Front Guide Rail Isolation: On the front of the sunroof guide rail, loosen the bolt a few turns but do not remove it entirely (Figure 12). Use a plastic wedge to slightly lift the guide rail. Insert a 20mm x 20mm section of felt strip material 533 867 910 A between the guide rail and the frame (Figure 13). Ensure the backing for the adhesive side is removed and the felt tape section adheres properly before tightening the screw. Reinstall the screw and tighten it to 5 Nm (Figure 14).
7. Rear Guide Rail Lubrication: On the rear of the sunroof guide rail, loosen the bolt shown in Figure 15 for a few turns, but do not remove it completely. Insert a small plastic wedge between the guide rail and the frame to separate the two parts slightly (Figure 16). Apply special lubricant G 060 567 A2 between the guide rail and the frame, starting from the end of the rail to the bolt location. Tighten the bolt to 5 Nm.
8. Glass Sunroof Panel Treatment: Measure and mark the center of the glass sunroof panel structure, as shown in Figure 17. Clean this area using cleaning solution D 009 401 04 or an equivalent surface preparation solvent. Apply a 20mm x 20mm section of adhesive felt strip material 533 863 288 A to this central area (Figures 18 and 19).
9. Final Assembly and Adjustment: Reassemble all components that were loosened or removed during these repairs. Make any necessary adjustments to the sunroof glass panel according to the specifications found in the Elsa Repair Manual (Body >> Body Exterior >> 60 Sunroof >> Sliding Sunroof >> Glass Panel, Adjusting). If necessary, reestablish all basic settings for the sliding roof and roller shade electronics.
