Symptoms

Owners of 2023-2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale (GC) and Dodge Hornet (GG) vehicles may notice an EPS warning light illuminating on the instrument panel. This warning light can appear alongside the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) warning lights. The condition may stem from several potential causes, including battery disconnection, replacement of the EPS unit, low battery charge or voltage, or an EPS power supply disconnection.

Fault Codes / DTCs

The primary diagnostic trouble code associated with this issue is C0529-00. This DTC indicates a fault within the Electric Steering Control Unit (EPS). When DTC C0529-00 is active, other Electronic Control Units (ECUs) such as the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Hybrid Control Processor (HCP), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Body Control Module (BCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Parking Aid Module (PAM), Electronic Transmission Module (ETM), and Half-shaft Control Module (HALF), as well as the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system, may also register active DTCs and display corresponding warning lights.

Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions

To diagnose the issue, a diagnostic tool should be connected to the Electric Guide Control Unit (EPS) to check for the presence of DTC C0529-00. If this code is active, the power steering re-initialization procedure is applicable. If DTC C0529-00 is not active, a more comprehensive troubleshooting process is required. During diagnosis, if C0529-00 is active, any implausible readings from the column torque, steering wheel angle, and accelerometer sensors should be disregarded.

Repair Procedure Summary

The resolution for the EPS warning light and DTC C0529-00 involves a power steering re-initialization and calibration process. This procedure can be initiated without a diagnostic tool (as described in the owner's manual) or with one.

Power Steering Re-initialization (without diagnostic tool)

1. Disconnect and then reconnect both battery posts as per the service manual.
2. With the diagnostic tool connected to the EPS, verify if DTC C0529-00 is active.
3. If C0529-00 is active, perform the following steps:
   • Move the ignition to the ENGINE position without pressing the brake pedal.
   • Press the brake pedal and move the ignition to the START position.
   • Fully turn the steering wheel to the right and hold for 2-3 seconds until a kickback is felt.
   • Fully turn the steering wheel to the left and hold for 2-3 seconds until a kickback is felt.
   • Return the steering wheel to the central position.
   • Switch off the engine by moving the ignition to the STOP position. The EPS warning light on the instrument panel should turn off.
