One morning, my father turned on the car. It was still in Park. He and my mom heard a noise, as if my dad was pushing on the gas pedal, but he was not. They turned off the car, turned it on again, and everything seemed fine. After driving for a bit, my father was back home and parking the car. Because of the way the parking lot is, you have to go slowly, less than 10 miles an hour, pushing on the gas a little to go up and incline and then turn right to slide into the parking spot as you break to finally park. As he was pulling into the parking spot, the car suddenly accelerated uncontrollably, and crashed hard into the building ahead. It broke pieces of the building, and the entire front of the car is totaled. My parents saw fire under the hood and my mom suffered a hand injury. They are otherwise unharmed. I know Unintended Sudden Acceleration was an issue with Ioniq EVs from 2019. It looks like it is happening to the hybrids as well. Thank you for looking into it.

While my wife and I were driving on the interstate, all dashboard warning lights came on at once, and the car began rumbling at regular intervals as it tried and failed to switch from electric vehicle (EV) mode to hybrid EV (HEV) mode, and the engine wouldn't start. At the same time, the power steering stopped working, the car struggled to go more than 40 MPH, and it started accelerating on its own and would not stop until I hit the brake. Each time the engine tried and failed to start, the car started accelerating again. I pulled off at a gas station, turned the car off, and called for a tow. I tried to turn it on again but got a "Check Hybrid System" message and could not start the car, so I had it towed to a dealer. They diagnosed it as a dead 12-volt battery; however, they had none in stock and would be unable to get one for 2 weeks, so they charged the 12v and told us we should be able to get home. It happened again a few hundred miles later, and the situation repeated itself. This 2nd dealer also diagnosed that the issue was the 12v but couldn't get one in for at least a week. We rented a car, drove home, and when the dealer replaced the battery, they shipped it up to us. A week later, the car's big battery (not the 12v) was failing to charge, so we brought it to another dealer. They claimed they had no trouble charging it and returned the car. Shortly after that, it died again, in the same fashion described above. We took it back to the dealer, and they had it for over a month, claiming they could not replicate the problem. They returned the car, having diagnosed no problem, so I drove around the dealer and replicated issue myself. It took 15 minutes for the check engine light to come on. I brought it back to the dealer. When they got in the car, the power steering was dead, and the car could barely move. They've now acknowledged that the problem exists and are trying to diagnose it for a 4th time (5th if you count when I was unable to get it to charge).

- #11445574December 30, 2021ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The 12v system in my vehicle is defective, resulting in the vehicle failing to operate. Since I have only operated it about 4 times, i am unable to state whether the issue would occur while the car was being driven. I have had the car checked by the dealer twice, and it is now at the service department with an unknown date for "repair". The diagnosis from the second dealer service department directly conflicts with what the first dealer service department said. Additionally, I have discovered that this is a known issue with this vehicle model, and Hyundai has failed to address it. I have filed a formal complaint with Hyundai, as the vehicle is still under manufacturers warranty. Incidentally, there is a newly issued recall that I suspect is related to the 12v system, as well.

I am not sure who to report this to, but NHTSA and Hyundai corporate office both report the car as having no recalls. The local dealership says it has 3, 2 for computer errors (my car currently has a computer error). When I asked the main Hyundai support people about this, they stated local dealership and the corporate office have different systems. I can concerned Hyundai is hiding recalls from the public by keeping them on a separate system at dealerships and not on the main website or NHTSA.

- #11433179September 16, 2021SERVICE BRAKES
When ABS engages briefly on a wet surface, there is an incomplete transition from regenerative braking to friction brakes, resulting in a hard pedal that does not actually engage the brakes. This is very dangerous and I have experienced this loss of braking force multiple times when stopping in the rain and a tire is on a slippery manhole cover or crosswalk line. Braking force is reduced significantly for a second or two until the friction brakes are engaged. If the vehicle is rolling in Neutral, the friction brakes work as designed with no delay. It is only during normal driving when the regenerative braking is involved that this issue can be replicated.

THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO COMPLAINT NUMBER 1# 1360258 SUBMITTED IN SEPT. IN PARTICULAR, I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE DEALERS REPLACE A WATER PUMP AND RELATED ASSEMBLIES FOR A TOTAL OF 3 REPLACEMENTS SINCE AUG. THIS WAS THEIR EFFORT TO DEAL WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ISSUES THAT HAVE RESULTED CONTINUED INCIDENTS OF ERRATIC AND UNCONTROLLED APPLICATION OF THE REGENERATIVE BREAKING (NOT BY DRIVER), SHUTTING OFF OF ANY ABILITY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WHILE DRIVING, AND COMPLETE SHUTOFFS OF THE CAR WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAYS, I.E. ALL LIGHTS OFF, NO RESPONSE FROM INSTRUMENTS EXCEPT FOR BREAKING TO A STOP. I REALIZE YOU MAY BE SHORT HANDED DEALING WITH COMPLAINTS, BUT I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY CONTACT SINCE FIRST REPORTING THIS AND WAS WONDERING IF I SHOULD EXPECT ANY? OR IS THIS ONLY ONCE YOU HAVE SO MANY RELATED COMPLAINTS TO INVESTIGATE? OR PERHAPS YOU NEED SOME MORE VERIFIABLE DOCUMENTATION OF THE EVENTS? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

- #11366856October 28, 2020SEAT BELTS
THE CAR WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT WHEN WE WERE STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY A FORD F150. WE WERE PUSHED INTO THE STOPPED VEHICLE IN FRONT OF US (VERY MINOR DAMAGE IN FRONT). I WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND MY HEAD BOUNCED OFF OF THE DASHBOARD. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE SEAT BEHIND THE DRIVER AND HER HEAD WAS BOUNCED OFF THE BACK OF THE DRIVERS SEAT. THE SEAT BELTS KEPT US IN OUR SEATS BUT THE SHOULDER BELTS FAILED TO ENGAGE. THE CAR HAS SINCE BEEN TOTALED DUE TO DAMAGE FROM THE REAR.

- #11362905October 5, 2020STRUCTURE:BODY, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, UNKNOWN OR OTHER
APPARENTLY, A FRONT-END COLLISION OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND UNOCCUPIED IN A PARKING LOT RESULTING IN $1232 IN DAMAGE TO BODY PARTS, ANTI-COLLISION RADAR, AND ELECTRONIC CRUISE CONTROL. ASTONISHINGLY, THE BUMPER AND EVEN THE FRONT LICENSE PLATE SUSTAINED ALMOST NO VISIBLE DAMAGE WHATSOEVER. SEE PHOTOS ATTACHED. THE COLLISION MUST HAVE HAPPENED AT EXTREMELY LOW SPEED AND IT IS OBVIOUS THE FRONT BUMPER DID NOTHING TO PROTECT THE REST OF THE CAR--ITS PRIMARY INTENDED FUNCTION. THIS WOULD BE THE EQUIVALENT OF A HOUSE BURNING DOWN TO PROTECT THE FUSE BOX. I CHECKED YOUR WEBSITE AND NOTE THAT THE HYUNDAI IONIQ IS AS YET NOT RATED. I SUSPECT THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE FOR A CAR TO SUSTAIN SUCH DAMAGE IN A PARKING LOT WITH ALMOST NO VISIBLE DAMAGE TO ITS PRIMARY PROTECTION MECHANISM: THE BUMPER. PLEASE NOTE THAT ITEMS DAMAGED WERE ALL IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE BUMPER--A VERY DANGEROUS PLACE FOR THEM TO BE.

- #11360258September 21, 2020SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
I HAVE HAD 4 INCIDENTS SO FAR OVER THE LAST MONTH, ALL LASTING UNDER 5 SECONDS. IN EACH CASE, THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SWITCHES TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM THE USER. THIS PRESENTS AS WHAT FEELS LIKE A LEVEL 3 (STRONG) BRAKING WHEN NONE WAS ON AND NO FOOT IS NEAR THE BRAKE, OR IF THE REGEN BRAKING WAS TURNED ON (IN ONE CASE TO LEVEL 1), IT SHUTS OFF MOMENTARILY. DURING THESE INCIDENTS, THE BEHAVIOR IS ALSO IRREGULARLY CHANGING BETWEEN FOR EXAMPLE HARD BREAKING (LEVEL 3) FOR A SECOND AND THEN FLUTTERING IRREGULARLY BETWEEN HARD AND LOW LEVELS. IN ONE INCIDENT, THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF (AND STAYED IN NEUTRAL) AFTER AN INCIDENT HAPPENED WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THE CAR THEN GLIDED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AS NORMAL. IN EACH CASE, THE INCIDENT OCCURS WHILE IN MOTION, NOT TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT MAY BE CURRENTLY SET ON DIFFERENT LEVELS OF REGEN BRAKING (IT'S HAPPENED BOTH IN LEVEL 0 (NONE) AND 1 (LOW). THE BEHAVIOUR IS NOT HOWEVER TRIGGER BY MANALLY CHANGING THE REGEN LEVEL BUT SEEMS TO JUST SPONTANEOUSLY HAPPEN WHILE SMOOTH DRIVING. MOST CASES OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS BUT ONE OCCURRED ON A SMOOTH HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 60MPH. NONE OF THE INCIDENTS HAVE CREATED AN ACCIDENT AS I WAS NOT VERY CLOSE TO ANY CAR IN ANY CASE. I DO HAVE TWO INVOICES FROM SEPARATE CAR DEALERS LOOKING AT THE PROBLEM. IN THE FIRST CASE, THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ERROR CODES BUT THEY FOUND THE WATER PUMP WAS LEAKING AND REPLACED THAT (PER A TSB). FOLLOWING ANOTHER INCIDENT I TOOK IT TO A SECOND DEALER WHO ALSO DID NOT SEE AN ERROR CODE NOR COULD FIND A PROBLEM. THIS, EVEN AFTER THE "EV" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON FOR A FULL DRIVE TWO DAYS PREVIOUS.

RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED TO FIX ANY POSSIBLE OVERHEATING ISSUES. A MONTH LATER I NOTICE ME HEATER NOT WORKING AND THEN IT STARTS OVER HEATING AND SMOKING FROM THE BACK, I TAKE IT IN AND THEY CLAIM THAT IT'S JUST A BUBBLE IN THE RADIATOR. ON 04/21/2020 ABOUT A MONTH LATER WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS PRIOR IT FLASHES THAT MY ENGINE IS OVERHEATED AND LARGE CLOUDS OF WHITE SMOKE STARTS COMING OUT OF MY EXHAUST PIPE. HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT BECAUSE OF A FAULTY SWITCH COOLANT LEAKED INTO MY ENGINE AND THE ENGINE IS NOW RUINED AND NEEDS TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED.

FOR THE SECOND COLD MORNING THIS YEAR MY IONIQ STALLED. I WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. TEMPERATURE WAS -3F, I PRESS THE POWER BUTTON, CAR TRIED TO START AND STALLED THREE TIMES IN A ROW THEN GOT A CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING MESSAGE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF THEN ON AGAIN AND IT STARTED TO STALL, I DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR TO KEEP A HIGH IDLE FOR A MINUTE. THE CAR RAN NORMAL DURING MY 7 MILE COMMUTE AFTER INCREASING THE I.
