Summary"Discharged Battery: Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed. MINI electrical systems and advancements in vehicle technology have resulted in an increased demand on the vehicle battery. This SI will help the dealer handle ""discharged battery"" complaints. A discharged battery can have various causes, most unrelated to the battery. A failed battery is often the symptom and not the cause. A fully serviceable battery fails when an electrical component causes the battery to discharge; the battery becomes internally damaged and must be replaced. For more information, refer to http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-42B.htm. For this reason, replacing the battery is not usually a permanent repair. The cause of the discharged battery must be analyzed in order to guarantee a proper repair. To repair the vehicle properly the first time in the workshop, the diagnostic test plans must be performed to completion, with all results taken into consideration. Without performing the energy diagnosis test plan, the root cause of the discharged battery cannot be identified. This increases the chances of a repeat repair. Discharged battery."

Summary"""Coasting"" Feature May Not Function After Programming. After programming to I-level F056-14-11-50x or higher, ""coasting"" while in green mode may no longer function. This feature is shown as activated in the green mode menu, and no relevant faults are stored. An EGS software error (I-levels of F056-13-11-50x to F056-14-07-50x) leads to incorrect EEPROM data when programmed to an I-level of F056-14-11-50x or higher."

Summary"Engine Cranks, No Start and/or Engine Coolant Temperature Faults. 1 The engine either exhibits a crank, no start or a hard start (long crank), usually on a cold engine. No faults are stored in the DME. Proceed to Correction 1 for further diagnosis. 2 NOTE: The engine may also exhibit the same starting behavior as in Situation1. The Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated, with one or more of the following fault codes stored in the DME: Engine temperature sensor faults ? 2943 Coolant temperature sensor, signal change too fast ? 2937 Coolant temperature sensor, electrical: short circuit to positive ? 2936 Coolant temperature sensor, electrical: short circuit to earth ? 293A Coolant temperature sensor, plausibility, cold start: temperature too high ? 293B Coolant-temperature sensor, plausibility, cold start: Temperature too low ? 2947 Coolant-temperature sensor, signal: Fixed on low ? 2948 Coolant-temperature sensor, signal: Fixed ? 3393 Engine downtime, plausibility: Time too long in correlation with engine coolant cooling down ? 3392 Engine downtime, plausibility: Time too short in correlation with engine coolant cooling downIf any of the above fault codes are stored, proceed to Correction 2. Engine thermostat faults: ? 348E Characteristic map thermostat, actuation: Short circuit to positive ? 348F Characteristic map thermostat, actuation: Short circuit to earth ? 3490 Characteristic map thermostat, actuation: Open circuit If any of the above fault codes are stored then proceed to Correction 2: The above fault codes for the engine temperature sensor and thermostat are the primary fault codes for turning the Service Engine Soon light on. 1. Poor solder contacts in the engine coolant temperature sensor integrated into the engine thermostat housing 2. A faulty external or replaceable engine coolant temperature sensor (see below for identifying production changes in the thermostat and engine temperature sensors) 3. A faulty map-contro

Summary"B38, B46 and B48 Engines: Drivability Complaints with Crankshaft Sensor Fault. The vehicle exhibits one of the following complaints: ? Loss of power when idling ? At a higher engine speed (above 3,000 rpm), a brief decrease in the engine speed can be felt. ? Extended cranking before the engine will start ? The customer notices an increased level of ""free play"" in the clutch pedal when changing gears. ? The clutch pedal remains depressed and will not return to the disengaged position. ? Emergency operation is active with one or more of the faults listed below. Faults stored in the vehicle: ? 160020 Crankshaft sensor, signal: implausible ? 180001 Catalytic converter: efficiency too low ? 200D0C Powertrain, safety function: bus signal rpm reduction implausible ? 11A002 Fuel high pressure, plausibility: Pressure too low ? 1F054D Powertrain, safety function: powertrain reduced power, DSC-signal implausible? 120408 Boost pressure control: Shut-down as a consecutive reaction"

SummaryEngine Misfire Due to Failed Ignition Coil. ? The Check Engine or Service Engine Soon (MIL) lamp is on with misfire fault(s) stored in the DME. ? Intermittent performance or rough running without a relevant DME fault stored The most likely cause is that an ignition coil has failed, which in many cases can be confirmed with basic diagnosis. During operation with high temperature fluctuations, the different materials used in the Bosch ignition coil construction can deteriorate over time, leading to a failure.

SummaryDiagnosing Stored Fault Codes to Help Avoid Repeat Repair Visits. Analysis of FASTA data and repeat repair visit reports indicates that there are many fault codes that are stored in the above vehicles, but they are not diagnosed to identify their root cause. Fault codes that are not diagnosed to find their root cause can lead to a repeat repair visit to the workshop by the customer. Where diagnosis (vehicle or short test) with ISTA has already started, it is important to diagnose the fault code(s) listed below (when they are stored in the vehicle) during the current workshop visit. This will help lead to a reduction in workshop repeat repair visits and higher customer satisfaction.
