  This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician that vehicles with engine Regular Production Option Code LGH or LML may have an Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor message displayed on the Driver Information Center. Technician will need to complete the current Service Information diagnostic for any current Diagnostic Trouble Codes or symptoms found. If an Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor message is displayed with a specific Diagnostic Trouble Code, use that specific Service Information diagnostic, and repair the vehicle as necessary. If the dealer has found an Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor message with no Diagnostic Trouble Code, diagnose the condition using the current Service Information diagnosis for Diagnostic Trouble Code P20EE / P207F (P2BAD for 2012 and newer model years). After making repairs use the Service Information Document titled "Reductant Fluid Quality Test (With or without DTCs)" to evaluate and clear the Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor DIC message.

  THIS PRELIMINARY INFORMATION COMMUNICATION PROVIDES INFORMATION TO THE TECHNICIAN ABOUT VEHICLE THAT MAY HAVE BLACK SMOKE ON A COLD START. A DUAL-PULSE INJECTION STRATEGY IS UTILIZED DURING ENGINE COLD START TO REDUCE THE TIME REQUIRED TO BRING THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER UP TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE. THIS SPLIT INJECTION STRATEGY LASTS FOR ABOUT 60 SECONDS ON COLD START. THIS PROCESS MAY CAUSE THE CUSTOMER TO SEE INCREASED BLACK SMOKE DURING COLD START AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED NORMAL.

TECHNICIAN WILL TEST TO DETERMINE IF THE CRANK SHAFT END PLAY IS WITHIN SPECIFICATION 0.0015–0.0086 INCH. IF END PLAY IS FOUND TO BE OUT OF SPECIFICATION, REMOVE ENGINE AND INSPECT FOR POSSIBLE CRANKSHAFT THRUST BEARING AND/OR CRANKSHAFT FOR WEAR. INSPECT THRUST BEARING FOR WEAR ON ONE SIDE AND CRANKSHAFT ON THAT “MATING” SURFACE. IF THE THRUST BEARING HAS THREE VERTICAL CHANNELS WORN OFF REPLACE CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS, MAIN BEARINGS, THRUST BEARING AND CRANKSHAFT. IF WORKING ON A CORVETTE THE OIL TANK WITH LINES AND OIL COOLER ARE BOTH REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED IF EQUIPPED.

ALSO SHUDDER FEELING THAT MAY BE DESCRIBED AS DRIVING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS OR ROUGH PAVEMENT. TECHNICIAN WILL DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND MONITOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SLIP. THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SLIP SPEED SHOULD BE 10 RPM OR LESS ALSO NOTE IF THE SHUDDER TAKES PLACE DURING TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH APPLY. IF THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SLIP SPEED IS IN THE RANGE OF 10 RPM OR LESS THE CONDITION IS POSSIBLY RELATED TO ENGINE PERFORMANCE. IF THE SHUDDER IS ONLY PRESENT IN 4 CYLINDER MODE AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SLIP IS 10 RPM OR LESS DEEM THE SHUDDER CONCERN NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT. IF THE SLIP SPEED IS BEYOND 10 RPM OR THERE IS SHUDDER DURING TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH APPLY THE TORQUE CONVERTER WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.

TO PERFORM AN INSTANT UPDATE OF THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SENSOR, PRESS AND HOLD THE RECIRC BUTTON AND AIR CONDITIONING BUTTON ON THE HEATER-VENT-AIR CONDITIONING CONTROL HEAD SIMULTANEOUSLY. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO PERFORM THIS BY USING A SCAN TOOL IN SPECIAL FUNCTION MODE AND SELECT INSTANT UPDATE.
